I'm looking at picking up a cheap ktm 450 sxf next year, I guess the question is does anyone have one or the 2011 model which is basically the same bike. If so whats it like to ride, handle, power delivery? 5 speed gearbox?.

hmm i havent ridden one but them seem pretty good only problem my friend had was adjusting the valves and pistons but that was the 2013 model so I'm not to sure about the 2011 model. Ive heard a few problems about them like clutch covers wearing out and also one to check is the rims bend quite easily for some reason so check when you looking at it if its got damaged rims i wouldn't get it because the bikes probably had a hard time you could replace em pretty easy though depends what you think. I doubt you would bend the rims to easy though. If you end up getting one just maintain it because you don't wanna pay for spare parts for em cause there not as cheap as the japanese parts. But overall if its in good condition you probably won't have a problem with it.

the ktm has always been the most powerful in torque and HP
becareful with the triple clamps is the one problem i've seen. if your jumping massive jumps they have been known to crack.
only real downside i think is the aftermarket parts price and servicing price. but other then that good bike from what i've seen and heard.
best looking bike in the class i reckon. im sure you'll be happy with it

Cheers mate, it's the standard one, I've been told that they are a bit of a handle full but would rather have the power there and get use to it than looking for more within a year. Servicing price has me a bit worried thou, what is the basic life span as such ie top end and all that I'm only doing the weekend trail and track riding. Just wanting a rough idea that's all. I've got these minis sorted just don't know a great deal on these big boys. The single spring clutch has me wondering aswell?

they would be less often then a 160+cc mini. proberly 40-80 hours depending on the rider riding it. some i've heard do 100+ hours, maintenance will always key. just when it gots bang is usually a couple grand instead of 100 for a pitbike or 2 stroke.
bottom end im not sure about how long they last, proberly abit longer then the top end.
they are quite different to the minis, i defiantly enjoy them alot more, been riding my cousins yzf the last couple of rides.
im hopefully getting a 2013 kx250f in the next month or so.

Cheers mate, I hope it all falls into place and I can get my hands on it. Bet you can't wait either!.

The 11 and 12 were still carby, but still good bikes. If you are unsure if you want a 450, you probably dont. Consider a 350, they were very good bikes, even though some of the reviews that you read leave you scratching your head a bit. I still love riding 250F's. There is a lot of info out there saying how bad they are to look after and maintain, but if you buy a good one and look after it right, they are great bikes. I rode a '13 Kawi 450 on the weekend, and hated it. They dont turn, are heavy and that air fork is super harsh. Heaps of mumbo when you twist that throttle though
