Hi Guys, Im about due for a new rear tyre for my bike was looking for a tyre with a harder compound because the one im using isnt up to the task. Im riding on hard compacted gravel with a loose powdery top its old logging tracks 5 mins from home. The tyre i have is a Kenda Carlsbad 80/100-12 41m and riding on this surface and the way i ride is killing this tyre. So i was wondering if any of you guys know of a tyre that would be more suited to this task. Also while we are talking about tyres what psi do you guys recommend i should use on the boys race bike. He's running 14/12 combo Carlsbads is 60kg in weight and the track he runs on has a powdery top with a hard compacted base. I've been running 18psi in the front and 14 psi in the rear is this ok or should i change the psi.
 
i've used dunlop geomaxs for awhile on hard pack dirt. thought they were pretty good. got a new wheel and had a kenda carlsbad but its ripped up pretty quick. was alright with it was afew rides old but i've been sliding around lot lately.
my friend runs a Vrubber tyre i think. its massive but he reckons it is awesome.
i've also used bridgestone m302 that was pretty good.
i run around 18-14 psi
 
Thanks motorvert24 the local bike shop has the dunlop geomaxs in stock i might try them. And thanks for the info :coolthumb:
 
I run a kenda on the front and a Dunlop Geomax on the back, so far no hassles, been a great tyre
 
what Harry said, when carlsbads go off, they go off badly.

how can you stand 18psi? wayyyy to low.

Geez Harry, 18-14. I gotta run 26 Atleast or im up for new tubes. How many rimlocks you running Mate.

26 psi seems alot mate how many psi in the rear tyre do you recommend.
I'll run 26 in the rear, its quite rocky and concrete hard dirt up here, so even for pinching the tube and spinning a valve I must run higher psi.

Hey if it works Harry stick with it dude, if I run any lower than 20 up here the tubes pinch on the rim or the tyre spits the valves very regularly. But they would be 2 very different terrains we ride so yeah pressures would be quite different.
 
Sorry Rodney, didn't see the first post about ya boy, if be sticking with 20 and 18 like young Harry does, being 60kg also that sounds like a good starting psi, sorry mate my bad
 
Personally I can vouch for the V rubber tyre that's what I use for my rear, and in my opinion it's slightly more aggressive than the Carlsbad, might be a bit to soft for what your after mate! :lock1:
 
22 in front, even if it's 20 i can tell the difference, you know cause im a pro, lol. I liek the front tyre to slide into a corner, niceeee
20 in rear, tyre that is.

i run dunlop geomaxs 20psi in the front and 15psi in the rear and im around 60kg

i find the geo's to be realy good i ran carlsbads befor the dunlops and there not to bad they just dont seen to last very long ill be sticking with the dunlop geomaxs from now on
 
I run a kenda carlsbad on the front at 20psi and my next tyre on the rear will be a bridgestone 204 (I think thats the one) on the rear at 25psi, any lower and I'll tear out the valve (I have no rims locks, thats why.
 
Thanks for that guys.The carlsbads seam to work well on the front i have them on my bike , the boys race bike and the wifes bike and i think i will keep them on the front of each of them. I have brought a dunlop geomax for the rear of my bike yesterday i will fit it sometime still have just under half tread left on the rear but the lugs are pretty rough. If the geomax goes well i will fit one to rear of each of the bikes. Thanks again guys :coolthumb:
 
Hi guys just thought i would say thanks for getting onto the Dunlop Geomax MX51 rear tyre. I fitted it to my bike a few days ago and im very happy with it. I went up the same tracks that killed my Carlsbad and i rode as hard if not harder than before for a total of 3 hours riding only stopping to refuel the bike. The Geomax took this punishment very well with no damage at all to the tread blocks just very lightly took the sharp edge off the middle lug and the ones each side of that from spinning. Was that happy with them, that after i cleaned the bike up i went into town and brought another Geomax for the boys race bike. I fitted it today even though the Carlsbad on it still had over well over 1/2 tread on it but was that impressed with the Geomax i fitted it now. The old Carlsbad will end up on my wifes bike later on. The young fella will test the tyre out next weekend on a practise day at up the coast. Also i was very impressed with the price of the Geomax at a cost of $55 each seeing i was paying $50 each for the Carlsbads. So if you need a harder compound tyre for your bike i know that you cant go wrong with a Dunlop Geomax MX51 there great. Thanks again guys :thumbup:
 
Rod, good info, I will get one this week fitted after what you wrote. However, my shop sells them for $68 WTF. I have to get a new wheel, so may as well go the Dunlop.
Tip - don't put the lock nut on the tube, lets it wriggle a bit and not tear

my shop sells them for $68, WTF where do you work flipper.
