Help me guys I recently just got my bike ready to take out for the year. i put a thumb throttle on it and had to shorten the cable but did not shorten the casing. the original carb is a molkt 26mm and always ran fine before now and even after ajusting i could not get it to run right and now it wont run. Today i got the 26mm mikuni for it and it still wont start even after playing with the adjustments. is the casing of the cable affecting it even though the slide in bot h carbs sit down all the way? idk where to start with getting it to run right or anything!

All help to get me in the right direction or atleast running again will help a ton!

Thanks, Miller52

Hi miller, there's a few things that you check to give us a better idea of the issue.

#Have you checked that you are getting a good spark?
#Have you checked your valve clearences?
#Have you checked the inlet manifold and new carby for air leaks?

is your shortened cable allowing the slide to close fully?
take the air filter off and shine a torch into the caby,
at the back underneath the slide, you need to have the slide sitting 1.5mm-2mm off the inside of the carby bore at the bottom

maybe post up a picture or 2 of your set up so if there is something obvious we can help

the mikuni is brand new just out of the box today and i need to get a new spark plug cause others are fouled out i am going to get an iridium ngk to see if it will help i have the needle jet on the lowest notch and the regulator screw 1.5 turns out i did shorten the cable casing and even when the cable isnt hooked up it doesnt work. the slide in the carb goes down all the way. what should my idle setting be on the mikuni? there is no air leaks and i want to adjust the valves to see if it will help even though it ran fine before i put it away for the winter.

the slide needs to be set to have about a 1.5mm gap underneath at the bottom to the carby body
normally you loosen the idle speed screw, let the slide drop right down,
then adjust the screw in till it touches the slide and starts lifting the slide, then go in 1 full turn from that.

that will give you a good base setting, so it will start then you can tune it from there.

with the needle clip on the bottom slot of the needle, that is full rich
take it off and fit it back to the middle notch

having no throttle cable connected will make it run very lean, due to air getting in the top and past the slide
same thing if you are trying to start it with no air filter, or a non oiled air filter.

the cable is hooked up just not to the throttle. having no air filter will make a difference? And because i didnt make this clear before it is a demon x xlr 140 that takes a 26mm carb the stock carb is a molkt and the carb on it now is a mikuni and does not have a filter because my filter from mt stock carb is bigger.

ok, well it will run richer if you can get it started without an oiled foam filter

try having the mixture screw turned out 3 full turns, see if that helps it at all
that's along with the other things i mentioned before too
