A 50-year-old man from Mossman near Cairns will face court after an alleged hit-and-run yesterday afternoon that left a 13-year-old boy in hospital with fractures, lacerations and bruising.

At around 3.45pm yesterday the man's vehicle allegedly veered over the incorrect side of the road and onto the grass area at the side of road and collided with a group of teenagers riding motorbikes inbound along the grass.

The car has allegedly hit the 13-year-old boy, knocking him from his bike.

It is alleged the man then swerved back onto the road and drove away without rendering assistance.

A short time later he contacted police by phone.

Police do not believe that speed, alcohol or fatigue were factors in the accident.

The boy was taken to the Cairns Base Hospital where he received treatment for multiple fractures.

The man has been charged with aggravated dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and grievous bodily harm.

He was released on bail and is due to appear in Mossman Magistrates Court on May 10.
