Yo, so today I was changing my oil. Couple of q's...

1. Is a 20w-60 okay? (don't know if it's synthetic, didn't say. It's valvoline.)

2. This is a total noob question but why is there a second plug next to the sump? Am I meant to be changing trans. fluid or something?

Cheers,
Jono

I honestly think 20 - 60 is a bit too thick but it will be ok.

what engine do you have?

I don't think the oil would heat up enough to run properly with that thickness.

The little engines are so out in the open that they don't really heat up enough to be running oil that thick.

i have like 20 - 50 and i think that's alright, should i change to like 15 - 50 or something??
Cheers

don't worry about the plug next to the sump plug, that's the timing chain tensioner. The transmission fluid on these engines is just the engine oil, they run a wet clutch. I dont' know about you guys, but i think 20-60 is too much, I run 10-40 so that oil can reach proper opperating temperatures

yeah you really should be using 10-40 mineral oil and not synthetic, synthetic will make your clutch slip if its in good condition due to it being a wet clutch system. Many of us guys/girls are using the same oil that goes into a modern combustion engine being about 20-50, this would be the absolute max. I am pretty sure they run a bit better with the 10-40 but thats just my opinion.

i use 15w50 and it seems good i cant seem to find 10w40 motorbike specific oil can any1 sugest any brands?

Damn, ive been running synthetic 20/60 in my thumpstar motor of over a year and its fine.... motors still going strong, and its a feb 05 motor with over 100hrs on it.

Do any of you guys know anything about oils ? when answering questions ?

It's jono's question time again!

1. how do you wash a 125? are there any parts you have to avoid (like spark plug, magneto??) or can i go nuts with the pressure washer?

2. What does CDI stand for and what's it do? Does a "performance" one off ebay really improve a bike?

Cheers.

1. Cover up your carby and muffler, one thing you can use to cover them is a plastic bag and a rubber band to hold it on. Dont get the magneto wet and dont get water on the wiring, the wiring should be ok if you're seat is on to cover them though.

2. I believe CDI stands for capacitor discharge ignition, basically it controls the spark.

Some CDI's are better than others but Ive only noticed small differences.

10w40 is really the only oil that should be used in these bikes as they dont actually run an oil pump, so anything thicker can have trouble getting everywhere it should.
Although 15w50 aint too bad.
A motorbike specific oil of this grade which ISNT synthetic is pretty hard to find sometimes and isnt exactly cheap.(remember you should only run mineral oil not synthetic.)
What was recommended to me when i got my bike was to use a 50/50 mixture of valvoline XLD 20w40 mixed equally with valvoline lo-vis 10w30. Ends up being pretty damn close to spot on.
You end up with 10 litres of oil for about $40-50(about half the price of normal oil!!)I have been using this mix for the life of my bike, so far i've done 4 oil changes with it and seems to be really good.
I trust the guy who gave me the advice(one of the site sponsors)and dont expect to have any trouble with it.

the reccomended oil is 10w 40.

To my knowledge the W (weight) value, is the oil's velocity when it is at -25 degrees celcius. The number infront of the value determines the thickness. The lower the number the thiner it is.

The 10W should be used because these engines have narrow oil passages, and you don't want to use a heavy weight oil as it can struggle to get around and can't lubricate the needed spots. (This occurs on cold startup where most damage is done)

The seccond value is the velocity at 100 degrees celcius.

Goose, these engines do run oil pumps.

I run motul 5100 in my modded engine with no problems. And the stock oil pump pushes the oil around fine
