ever since I have had my redbaron bar kit, which comes with a throttle cable and carby cap, my crf50 has been hunting, not with a gun, it wont idle at a sustained RPM, would idle high, low. high, low. I have tuned many motocrossers and some farm bikes and this one just about had me stumped.

i initally suspected an air leak, checked gaskets, checked machined faces and flanges. no leaks.

maybe running way too lean, checked plug, no not lean.

checked valves, might be too tight. nope they are sweet.

put up with it for a while then it started to really **** me. so I went for another needle clip adjustment, and saw a bit of dirt on the slide on top of the needle clip. WTF!!! how does it get in there. closer inspection, its coming down the seat where the throttle cable sits into the billet carby cap. also letting air in, causing the hunting. its a pretty sloppy fit.

i wrapped some electrical tape around the steel nipple on the end of the cable housing so it was a nice snug fit. sweet as now. idles perfect. i also wraped one strip of tape around the top of the seat to seal the cable in there for good measure.

so if any one else has a CRF that is hunting, maybe try this. but if your crf is stealing your guns and killing animals, you got a bigger problem.

while i am on red baron issues, TOO MUCH PAINT ON YOUR BARS GUYS!! my bars are slipping all over the place. the paint is acting like a lubricant in the top clamps. going to sand it back to bare metal, and see if i can get a good grip with the clamps then.

cheers,

westy.

Good info mate , i have heard of this problem a few times , should help a few.

Nice write up.

I also found bits of dirt on my clip the same ill try the tape sollution too. thanks for the info.
my bars didnt slip though but i do crank them down pretty hard and always check them

yeh, im just a bit scared because they have supplied stainless cap screws. Stainless into aliminium if reefed up too tight causes a hell of a mess. I will try bare metal, will easily get a good hold, if not, duct tape and cable ties fix everything.

My mate had the same problem with his Pitpro the cable cover that sits around the top of the carbie wasnt there and a **** load of dirt got into the carbie and siezed up the slider, every time you went to start it it would rev its head off. Heaps of WD-40 got is slidin. Your probably didnt have as much dirt in the carbie as him though. lol

cheers jono

thanks mate i had the same problem with my 50 a while back and ended up taking it to a shop .

Yeah man
most of the time if you have rev or idle issues, it will mostly be a problem with dirt.

When ever my idle is right one minute then not the next, i pull apart the carbie, clean it and most of the time it works.

If that doesnt work then check clearences, fuel mixture etc...

Maintaining and fixing troubles with bikes is all about process of elimination.

Also its a good idea to clean your carbie after a muddy or dusty ride.

Cheers Jono
