hey guys just got a few quick questions about my pit bike (125cc atomik)

i just bought it second hand and have a few issues

It doesnt have an air filter on it it just has a piece of mesh over the intake because apparently it goes better without an air filter? is this true? what filter is best suited?

Also, just wondering if re packing the muffler with something might make it a bit quieter or sound a bit better. It sounds alright now but its a bit loud just want it to have a bit deeper note.

what is and do i need a NGK spark plug?

It has electric start but isnt working. i was told it sjust because the battery is flat? Nothing at all happens when i press the elec start button...

cheers for everyones help so far

hi malex. im not an expert ( so guys correct me if im wrong) but hope this helps.

yes you should fit an air filter, otherwise your sucking in dirty air. the filter is to reduce the amount of dirt and moisture entering the engine thus extending the engines life.

if you think the battery is flat, check it with a multimeter. if it is flat try to charge it and check the s.g. of each cell.

to me NGK is the supreme plug to use, as for the index number of the plug you require i cant help at this stage.

anything is better than nothing, depends on the amount of space you have. in my case i have an air box and the filter inside is just 2 bits of square mesh with filter foam packed inbetween and wedge inside the box. u could try a uni filter or a lil pod filter even if you wish.

you should always use an air filter or else the live of the engine is reduced dramatically.
hopefully the engine hasnt been used too much without 1.
measure the the carb where the filter goes on and go get a uni filter for it and be sure to get filter oil for it too...they cant be used dry or else they wont be effective enough..

thanks heaps

any ideas on the electric start? how do i charge the battery?

with a battery charger :p i would use a multimeter first and check the voltage in the battery u hav, should be 12v or above. asuming its a 12v battery, easy way to check is count number of cells and time by 2 = voltage of battery. if its under put on charge using on ordinary car battery charger will do for a few hours on mininum level setting/5-8amp if it has a gauge.

yeah charge the battery and get her running then take her out for a blast for an hour and charge her up. The Spark plug, got for ngk one and its a 7 on the code you need. Not sure of exact code but if you type in pit bike spark plug anywhere and it has 7 in it, will probably be the right one, i could tell you when i get home from work. Got a new one sitting to be used :D

Yeh definately buy a uni filter.
And definately buy an NGK spark plug.
Funilly enough, just today my spark plug blew or whatever the correct term is and drove down to get a NGK one.
I can actually notice the difference in performance, I know that sounds ridiculous.
When I rev it, its alot smoother, and I can take off in 2nd very easily.
Whereas before if I was to take off in second it would be on the edge of stalling...
As for the battery I have no clue. I would say charge it but thats blatantly obvious.
Hope this helps, Mitch.
