how do i know what model my bike is

How can i tell what make and model my bike is? Is it important to know this? I recently bought the bike off another lady friend, but as IM new to riding I didnt really ask much about the make and model as i just wanted something to learn on. All i know about it is that it was a 110cc but now 125 and was purchased at pitboss empire on the coast. thanks in advanced for any help
