Hi there, how do you remove the valves from the head. Do you need to compress the spring or something??

i havn't got the correct tools to do it but this is how i get em out.

strip head, rockers & cam out -
then i get a ring spaner and put it thru the rocker cover onto the top of the spring. I get a small socket and put it on the ground and put the head ontop. The socket holds the valve shut. then with a moan and shove i leaver the valve open/depress spring and remove collets. I can get it first or second try but first time took about half an hour of moans and yells to get them otu.

Might be an idea to put a old t-shirt over the head while your doing it only leaving a large enough gap to see what your doing. The collets tend to launch out of there sometimes if your spanner slips.

If you need more info i'll go take some photos soonish

u need to have this ring spanner? is there any way else u can compress the spring

ohh tru, its just hard to get them in there with little space, and I guess it needs to fit tightly against the spring.

pretty much the exact same way, I put a short socket to hold the valves shut, and pushed down on the springs using the wrench, and used a magnet to take out the two small pieces, requires a lot of force to push down

Have fun trying to get them back in it may take awhile. You mite need someone to give you some help to get them back in. It can be alot of fun.

lol get urself a socket that fits tightly over valve springs
slide it over them
smack the socket with a nylon mallet and walla ur vaves are out

You would have to becarefull not to bend the valves when hitting the socket with a mallet. You can get the correct tool to do the job for about $50 to $70 and it will make the job alot better to put them back in by yourself.

it wont bend the valves as they have enough room to protrude in the socket

I normally roll a rag into a tight ball to fit into the combustion chamber with the head sitting on a soft surface (carpet or newspaper) .... that way nothing gets marked or damaged ....... then use a socket (a bit smaller than the retainer) and extension fitted to a "T" wrench . All you do is push down strongly on the retainer a few times and the collets pop out inside the socket (they can't fly out anywhere).

But getting them back in is a real PITA ......... you have to use CRF's ring spanner method , tweezers , a small screwdriver , safety goggles , be in a bare room with white floors so you can find ejected collets easily , and have 8 arms plus tie a pad over your mouth so that nobody can hear you yelling and cursing .....

You'd need to make a pipe with a "T" handle ....... then grind the sides of the pipe away leaving a ring on the end where it contacts the retainer to allow you to put the collets back in from the side ........... like how the end of this compressor is shaped :

XR75's have heaps stronger springs than horizontal engines but I was doing them on my own within seconds from age 14 without ever needing the proper tool ........ but horizontal engine heads are a totally different story because it's hard to get at things ......

I finally bought the proper valve spring compressor PLUS a few extras (due to traumatic memories) :p .......

I put links to pics up like this because we've had trojans trying to sneak in ever since signing up to photo bucket .......

I hear you about that!!!
The first time i did it i came to a point where i was ready to throw the head against the wall. Should have heard the language coming out of my mouth would of liked to know what the neighbours thought.

lol that why i love working at a pitty shop i just go to work and use the valve spring compressor

spanner and rag method works for me, have been thinking about making a compressor but CBF right now lol

or if you want a real easy quick way, just use a long socket or plug socket on the retainer and holding the head upside down in your hand just pump the spring a couple of times and they just fall out...easy

I first saw the small engine compressors on Dratv's site and luckily ...... saved this link because it doesn't appear to be on his site anymore ...... He reckons the cheapies are better than an expensive genuine Honda compressor for putting the collets back in ....... :)
