hey i noticed that a few guys on hear ride mountain bikes and im just windering how often the chain should be replaced??? I've got a giant yukon and have had it for bout 4 months and riden it about 600km and it feels when changing gears it feels as though the chain slips abit. is it time for a new chain or is it just that i need to take a couple of links out?

i do alot of mountain bike riding too

Its a chain dont bother changing it till it snaps.
Ask your bikeshop if you dont belive me :) just dont do it too tight or too loose and it will last.

yeah but the problem is the rear derailleur cant keep the chain tension tight enough when its running on the smaller sprockets and when landing from a jump or from bunny hopping over something the chain jumps off the sprockets, will only do it ocassionally like 1 in 10 times but it gets annoyin. So i just take a couple of links out to tighten it? and chains do need to be changed every so oftem, otherwise you wear the teeth of the sprockets out and then you'll be up to replace cassettes and stuff, which can be costly

thanks

yeah thats what i ended up doin just took out a link awhile ago which fixed it all up :)

theres 2 screws on the side of the derailer 1 moves it forward and back the goes side to side if it happens again try playing with these hope this helps

the HIGH and LOW screws on the deraiulure ONLY change where the shifting STOPS, they are limiting screws, if it wasnt shifting into the highest or the lowest gears then you would adjust these, or if it ws OVER shifting and the chain was falling between the frame and rim, or cluster and hub, but for everyday maintenance, its best to leave them how they are.

The problem more than likely existst in the cable tension, which can be fixed by putting the bike in the Highest gear possible(this SHOULD mean there is no tension on the gear cable for the rear derauilure) Using a 4mm? allen key undo the cable at the derauilure, and wind adjustment nuts ALL the way in, pull the cable tight and do up cable retaining nut. go thru the gears with the bike on a stand, and idjust the barrels as required.

IF you NEED to touch the H and L settings, SMALL adjustments make a BIG difference.

oh and make sure you post in the Pushie Picture Thread :)

As for replacing the chain, it should only need to be done when the chain rings or the cluster is changed. dont skimp on the new chain either, get smething decent, better to pay an extra $5. and get a good quality chain that will last and mesh correctly with the gears than a cheap one that will snap or stretch in a short amount of time causing you more headaches.
