Hi there ladies and lads,

I'm new to motorbikes/pitbikes, never rode a bike with a motor on it, was just wondering how hard it would be to learn to ride a pitbike? I can fluently drive a manual car so I don't know if that'll help in anyway.

I know how normal motorbikes work, as in the controls and stuff. Do pitbikes have the same setup?

I've always wanted to get a motorbike to ride on the road as a daily but my dad always chucks a hissy fit everytime I bring the subject up. So I thought riding a dirtbike in a closed course would be safer than being out in traffic where a car can clean you up anytime.

How long did it take you to be able to ride along with others on the track?

Cheers
Mike

Pit bikes are easy as to ride mate.

Everyone is going to have a different answer to how long it took them to be confident to ride on tracks with others, but it shouldn't be too long, just depends how you go. Confidence is the biggest thing you need to have when riding on tracks.

What kind of money are you wanting to spend on a pit bike? So we can help you choose the right bike.

Hey mate, thanks for the response.

I'm willing to spend around $1k ish on the bike. Do you need the same level of protective gear as when riding a road bike besides the helmet? E.g. Body protection(those body armour things), knee and leg protection, boots.

I've been looking at DHZ bikes and the OUTLAW 140 looks pretty decent. What's the difference between that and the DPRO 140?

the OUTLAW 140 is crf50 shape and the DPRO 140 is crf70 style bigger bid

Yeah I noticed the tail is abit shorter. Looks kinda odd lol.

Are there practice spots anywhere in Sydney for beginners? I don't wanna cop a 1.5k fine for riding down the street.

coz you know how to drive a manual car i rekon it'll help you heaps with the clutch on a bike

mate a helmet boots and gloves are a must then anything else that makes you feel safe to ride with confidence

Well I picked up a DHZ DPRO 140 today along with a helmet, boots and gloves. I've noticed the throttle is very responsive! I'm still trying to learn on it, my mate managed to pop a wheelie accidentally and almost ended up through the back wall of the garage lol.

Just finished putting it together with some mates. Took a while to get it started and I noticed abit of smoke coming out when it first started up, now it's stopped blowing smoke. Is that normal?

I'm going to try to do the oil change, valve clearance check and locktite all the nuts tomorrow using the guides on here.

Already having fun! Pretty damn loud for a little bike too!

Don't pansy or baby it ... make it pull relatively hard without revving it too high or letting it over-heat ...

That'll bed the rings in properly and quickly ... It's normal for a new motor to use oil until the rings bed-in ...

As the rings start sealing better , the compression might increase ... Read up on the proper starting procedure (start a kick off at just after TDC) and stick to it to avoid broken kick starter mech gears ...

Especially if it's kicking back ... Good luck and enjoy your new bike ...

Thanks Cactus Jack, I gave it abit on my first ride, and I followed the instructions on how to start it except it sometimes takes me quite a few kicks to get it started. It also shuts off sometimes right after starting up, I have to keep revving it to keep it running.

I start with the choke on, then i put it to the middle position to warm, then to off. Sometimes it stalls before I can even get it to the middle position.

Is this a carby problem or maybe the valve clearance? Didn't have time to work on the bike properly today, only changed the engine oil, so I'll have to look into it next weekend.

Enough about the problems though, I rode it down the road and now I know why people buy motorbikes. THE ADRENALINE! You just feel so free on a bike, pretty intimidating for a first timer but I got the basics down, just need to find the perfect position to place my left foot to change gears, other than that, I think I've got the hang of it. Way easier than I thought it would be.

Hope to see some of you guys at Appin soon!
