Orion Ducar 140 26mm Mikuni starter plunger position help?

Hi, i have just got an Orion 140cc Ducar with a Mikuni 26mm on it, the type that has a lever that acts as a choke but is really a cold start plunger. I assumed like most chokes that you would push it down to make work but once the bikes going etc it runs smoother with the lever UP? when i push it down it runs rough and backfires. So can anyone confirm if they have the same carby that having the lever in the up position is the position for normal running? just want to be 100% sure its the way its meant to be or if something else is going on?

up for on and down for off mate.. down for normal running..

? ok well thats weird, how come mine runs like a dog when its down but smooth as when up?

choke does just that and chockes the motor of air if the motor runs better with the choke on the motor is asking for more fuel
