Was changing the chain on my bike last night and noticed the rear sprocket was a bit dirty so i took it of and cleaned it then thought to myself why not paint it? so i was just wondering if anyone has done this before and how it turned out, i know that the teeth of the sprocket will not hold paint as the chain will wear it of quick. But what sorta paint would be good to do it with? and do i need to paint it with a primer first? also what colour do ya think i should paint it? bike is black and red pit pro graphics, so i thought maybe a red? I thought of maybe a chrome or even a white too but didnt think it would look any good?

Would this idea work or would it just come straight off and id be wasting my time??

thanks

you would have to primer it but it would most probably chip off like crazy , i thought about it to.. since i have a spare sprocket just to see how it would look but paint on things strips easy as ! and with a chain smashing around it it probably wouldn't look pretty after a while

waste of time mate, the chain will wear it out pretty fast and it will flake off.
the best idea i could think of his galvanizing or chroming.

hmmm got a massive galvanizing bath at work...

something i am considering doing, my mate can airbrush so i was going to get some lightening done on it...

you mite get lucky and it will just scratch off were the chain touches but it will most likely flake from the teeth to the centre

if you prep the surface properly it might hold paint... scuff it up good with rough sandpaper, then smooth it out with finer sandpaper... clean it with some prepsol, or a similar solvent so that there is no grease, oil, dirt or any crap on it... spray away with a bit of primer, then hit it with a top coat. if the metal is prepped properly, it might hold the paint a bit longer, but powder coating is probably a better option... or anodising... but then you could just jump on ebay, and buy an anodised sprocket for it, for half the cost, and a shi*load less effort...

no matter how good you prep it and paint it, the paint will rub off around the teeth so it will end up looking worse than it first was.

This sounds like a good idea. if i took my sprocket off and got it professionally powdercoated would it hold up alright?

You could try masking where the chain contacts. Might keep the paint on longer

I was thinking something like that!! but i was imagining alot more complex way :D thats probably your best bet so you dont get big flakes flaking off

hey guys finally got around to painting the sprokets, im gonna change the sprokets over for more speed soon so if it all flakes off and looks crap then i dont care, lol, i also cut some of the flywheel cover to show the front sprocket

I also painted the hex bolts that hold the sprocket on too

take it for a decent ride and let us know how the paint held up.
