Hey guys,

I would first of all like to say great site for all the z50 people down in Australia. I picked up this z50j a while ago because it had a compliance plate, so fingers crossed VicRoad will let me get it on the road, I sent the letter off last week asking for permission and they phoned up today asking what year the bike is. Also the bike is 6 volts. Any help would be great, and if anybody is in the same boat as me I would love to hear from them as well.

So these are my questions.

  • What is the year of the bike?? Is it what is on the compliance plate?? If that is the case it say 12/80.. So 1980 right.

  • As you can see from the pics there is alittle bit of work to be done to get this baby roadworth, when I am looking on websites what model should I be looking at. The plate says its a z50j

  • The handle bars on the bike, are they stock or has a previous owner put them on?? Because I havent seen any pics with these on before.

  • The tank is rusted through at the bottom, what can i do, is there something I can do to reseal the inside, or where is the best place to get a new tank.

I think thats all the questions for now, I should get the letter from VicRoad in the next week they said, so fingers crossed ill be riding this baby around Melbourne in no time at all. I am sure I will have some more question if they say yes and then ill be in full swing to get it roadworthy.

Thanks
Nathan

Thanks, but just went and checked but couldn't find anything stamped on the frame but the Vin Number on the head stem and thats all.

You have a 1980 Honda Z50J2 there. 12/80 is the manufacture date and is what vicroads will be looking for.

The handlebars are not stock, they have been replacedd with risers, clamps and BMX style bars.

Depending on how bad the holes in the tank are you can seal it with a product from Por15. You can buy it from http://www.ppc.au.com/ I've used it and it works well for rusty tanks. Otherwise, PM me, i have a new seat and tank for that model.

Looks like you have some work to do before you're on the road though, you'll need all the lights, indicators, mirrors etc working for a rwc.

Have fun and dont be scared to ask questions!

Thanks for all your help, I have just found this website http://www.ka-ha.de/mm-history.html and it is saying that the difference between the J1 and J2 is that the 2 has a Clutch 4-Speed while the 1 just has the Automatic 3-Speed. So does this mean I have a J1??? or am I missing something or does the website have it wrong.

Nathan

The J2 we got here had a three speed auto clutch, just like all other Z's we got. There are heaps of variation on this shape of Z, in fact they still make them new in Japan...
