hey guys, i just found your forum today and i really like it so far

I found this bike sitting on the side of my buddies house and it has been sitting for a year. i eventually got it to turn over and the ole girl actually ran. long story short, i thought it was in neutral when i cranked it with the choke wide open and it took off on me b/c is was in 2nd... :D

haha. well i ended up picking it up for $50 and am planning on bringing it back to life! aforementioned buddy and some of his friends cruise our town (Greenville SC in the States) during the summer and i want to join.

shes pretty beat as of now. im trying to keep this low budget because i already have a bad VW obsession and am constantly pouring money into my 03 gti. Any information/advice/forewarnings of the trouble im getting myself into would be much appreciated!!

thanks in advance guys

Persoally I'd start by ripping the whole thing apart. Clean and check each component and upgrade all the parts that are neccessary. My list of things I'd do:

-strengthening the frame and then getting it re-coated
- upgrading rear swingarm to a decent aloy swinger
- Check forks for busted fork seals and if needed reoil and replace seals
- Upgrade rear shock (DNM, FAstace, GPX shocker is good)
- Nice set of tapers and rips... itll change the whole feel of the bike
- New set of crf50 plastics
- New crf50 seat if possible
- Sort out the rear rim... bit buckled

My forewarning to you is... If you want to turn this into a decent bike that is reliable and not going to fall to bits on ya, itll probably take a little bit of coin. My advice is to use the mini classifieds section here and pick up some sweet deals of parts you need.

Good luck,
Carlton

hey.. really depends how good you want the end result..
while the bike looks to be in bad shape the vitals dont seem to bad.

things i would be checking/doin

disassemble and clean it all up, make sure the frame isnt cracked/bent.
sus the shocks out. sus the brakes out, give the engine a good service.. replace/lube throttle cable. clean the carb and fuel tank out.

grease the headstem bearings and slowly assemble everything.. change of plastics might be good too.

another thing to check for is stripped threads in the bottom of the engine where the peg mount goes..

I reckon they would fit wayne. Tank looks awfully like that of a crf50?

there xr50 plastics so crf50 are the same

and to be sure.. the rear guard and side plates should be all one piece

thanks for the advice guys. ive been looking at some xr50 plastics already and a new carb will be in order with the week. i need a whole new throttle set up for sure as my current one is shot. what size carb do you all recommend? its a 107cc and im new the carby game (im used to efi stuff).

the frame and body should be torn apart tomorrow so i can strip it and repaint it all. the rear strut seems to be pretty stout, just needs a new cotter pin for the retainer.

im not really sure what tapers and rips are though haha

ill keep you guys updated with pictures, hopefully saturday at the latest

Hey mate. What sorta dough are you looking at spending on the carby?
Id probably be looking at getting a 19mm or 20mm carby for the bike.

im not looking to spend a whole bunch the first time i build it. im looking for something to ride around over the summer. I have some friends that ride on the streets around here, sort of like a 50 biker gang haha.

but i just want it to be running consistently, and running WELL!!

i stripped the bike today and it is completely apart. im taking the carb up to my local dirt bike shop, though i looked it over and it seems to be fine, which is awesome. the throttle still needs to be replaced, which sucks but oh well. ill be painting the frame black (i have a lot of paint left over from previous stuff) but i cant decide on plastic color. I want something outrageous like purple haha.

Oh! i found the "VIN" and this bad boy was made in 04. ive gotta look up the model number and such to find parts!!

No you don't... Most parts will be interchangeable with other models of bike, you'll find lots of information on this site and if you get stuck people on here will be able to point you in the right direction :)

Chonda,

Maybe, only maybe.

They have some very different laws in the US regarding when a motorized vehicle is actually considered to be a motorized vehicle.

It differs from state to state.

I am sure we would all be riding our 50-80cc bikes around the place if there was no law against it. Well, I can only speak for me and I know I would be pouring milk down the sink each day to give me an excuse to ride my mini to the shops to get more.

Kind of sounds like Nirvana really. Close your eyes and think of the possibilities. AAGH.

Now the trade off begins. A post Bush America with all of the riding I can handle or a Caretaker Prime minister Australia with the most ridiculous laws invading our civil liberties at all levels.

Its sad to say, but I am leaning towards America.

Hey at least housing is cheap:)

Try not to break too many laws mate and enjoy your little bike. I hope you realize you could have been a property magnate with what that little thing cost you.:)

Logic

We do have bike laws, but anything under 50cc doesn't need tags. Must of us have at least 80s, but its a 50 frame so not much is said by the police.

I dont really think I could buy any propety for 50 bucks, but you are right about the housing market. But hey our whole economy is in the crapper so no one had money to but the cheap houses!! I just turned 20 and im currently in school for auto body and auto technology, just in case you all were wondering.

Thanks for all the tips and advoce guys!

And I don't mean biker gang like the common conception. I just mean riding around town and when we find a nice hill, jump it!!
