Hey everyone,

Just wondering if there is anyone who has had much experiences with reco'd motors in cars.

For example - the old holden vp/vn commodore v6 motor. Were there many problems with these.

Can any one recommend a motor to replace one of these? ( It's in a 1986 Mitsubishi l300 ). I just think the motor is getting past it's used by date - and may need a change over.

Before it has the v6 - it had a standard 2.0 4cyl in it, and a guy put a commodore v6 in it.

Would it be ideal to keep the commodore v6, or get something similar and newer?

Of course - keeping costs reasonable.

Cheers

sean01 is the man to talk to.........i have a vp V6 motor and box for sale, still in car with rear end damage, every thing is A1 condition and fully functioning, just thought id let you know

the commo v6 motor is a good motor.
i would keep it setup to the v6 or else it will set you back more money for another swap over.

you can replace the motor with a wreckers engine usually around $750 exchange..

about the only thing id replace it with would be a later model commo engine, like the ecotec v6 out of VS commo's and above...but it will require a rewire and different gearbox unless its still a manual..

as for actually rebuilding the current motor, it would probly set you back a bit.
(stating worse case scenario) would more than likely need a bore n hone, crank grind and head reco. just there you would see about $800 plus parts and thts not including a new piston/ring set, gasket kit, crank bearings, cam and balance shaft bearings, timing gear set, welsh plug and so on...
then of course theres the labour in volved to assemble the engine and refit the new pistons on the rods etc... theres a lot iv left out but i already feel like im draggin this on lol...

bottom line... replace with a wreckers engine (3 month warranty)
but if you love your car to bits and money means nothing then reco the engine..

I'm pretty sure they stopped using the"Eco Tech" the model before the VY then they came out with the new "alloy tech"

The alloy tech engine is pretty much the same yeah sean?

And type into google Holden Alloy Tech specs and it will tell you how much power etc its not to bad its just under the power of the 4Ltr straight 6 - Ford XR6....

iv had a few change over or second hand engines thru various cars.

Being that your van has had a conversion. forget going back to a 4ccyl. for starters. You will get away with an entire engine, and gearbox for $500 for fleebay, then its just a matter of fitting it.. which may be tricky in a van..possibly involving taking the body off the chassis, swapping the engine, then replacing the body..

If you buy second hand, try and get an engine you can see and hear running before its removed. least you know its a goer then. If your buying under faith, removed but not runable, id be inclined to ask for some kind of written acknowledgement that the engine DOES actually go!

check out whats on fleebay ;)

Ditch the v6 and drop a rb30 in it... Pick them up for 100 to 300 bucks... then get stock vl turbo setup for around 1k.... average of 150rwkw at 6psi for stock rb30et and average of 190 to 200rwkw at 10psi with good exhaust where as the v6 would only have around 100 to 110rwkw.

^^ problem with that is engine mounts, unless the rb is the same setup as the v6 block...? and the fact its already been plated for the Boat Anchor and wuld need replating/reengineering for the RB.. Althou the option is there to put a supercharged v6 into it and get some more horses from REAL forced induction. ;)

turbo chargers are far superior to super chargers. Much easier and cheaper to get performance out of a turbo as well.

somehow i dont think he is looking for performance...
he's simply waintin to refresh/replace the engine...

and a v6 in an L300 should have plenty of stick
