Hi guys, I've got a 250cc thumpstar bike (only a few weeks old) I've got a query about the tappits noise level, when I start it up you dont really hear much tapping, but after a good ride for a couple of hours it is more noticible, I know that it depends what type of engine components you have determine whether you should hear them or not and whether its doing damage. Wondering if there is any easy way to tell if I should be hearing the noise or not, also I've read its better to hear tappit noise then none at all.
I run 15/40 oil type, castrol something.

cheers

Nic

that cant be good, the only normal tappit noise i am aware of is the one when your bike is idling and there is no tension on the cam chain... if it gets louder this means there is some more slack in the cam chain! and these bikes are tensioned by oil pressure! so it could be an oil pressure problem... oil grade shouldnt be the matter... but as i said under load this is not a normal noise so something is not quite right! id contact atomic and notify them of your problems

Do you know what a tappet is? If you do then you would realise that the cam chain has nothing to do with the tappets.

Have you checked your tappet clearances yet? usually they will need adjusting after the bike is run in. I highly doubt you have an oil pressure problem, i would keep riding it for a few more rides then adjust them after everything has worn in.

yeah, that was going to be my next step to check clearance, underload I think there is no tappet noise, or the sound is reduced allot.

Thanks heaps for you reply, will check it out after a few more rides!

oh another quest, sounds silly (very new to motobike engines) is there an oil filter or diaframe inisde that should be changed along with an oil change??
