Hi Everyone,

I have a reasonably new Atomik Reign with a 150cc YX engine. I had it serviced (which included a valve clearances check) and since around then it has been using oil and blowing terrible amounts of smoke. It was overfilled with oil, could this have been the cause? Or perhaps something to do with the valves? I'm guessing the rings may be damaged seeing how its blowing so much smoke.. Apart from that it seems to be running fine, and very happy with the grunt it pushes out so far!
Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help!

i would take it back to the guy that did the last service....dont blame him for the problem....be nice and ask why its blowing smoke....(if its a blown head gasket...try retensioning the 4 x 10mm head nuts)...

Drain the excess oil out and when you get the level correct test it again, theres a good chance thats the cause of the smoke!

Goodluck

Thanks for your replies!

Just so I can understand, how would a head gasket let oil leak through to the piston? Does that mean it would let it through from the cam shaft area somewhere? This gives me hope! :)
I rang up the day after and said about the high oil level and he just said to keep riding it till it evened out (because it was coming out the breather) and it wouldn't harm the engine. He also said that they normally blow a bit of smoke. So this is what I've done and been riding it for awhile like it, but theres definitely something wrong as its worse than a two stroke blowing smoke!!
I'll see how I go with the head gasket suggestions!

I bought two AtimiK Nitros 150's with the YX engine in March 2008. The one was for a mate who overfilled the oil and it started blowing clouds of blue smoke after this. We drained the oil and refilled to the correct level but it still belches blue smoke. The other bike has recently started blowing blue smoke so I am guessing they either have poor oil rings or valve guide seals.

get a decent compression piston and rings while your at it, simple, easy and more power :)

sounds like valve guides are worn do you sit it idling for a while or giving it big revs?
have you ever seen the exhaust red hot when sitting there reving it??

hey mate i had the exact same thing happen on my lifan 140 top end was shagged due to hole in my intake manifold. it still ran ok not the best but ok it used so much oil (i was litterally going from full to near empty in a day) and blew a shite load of smoke i changed the valve stem seals while i was at it i think i used yzf450 ones they were the same and better than chinese rubber! shes now a 150 with higher comp and got a cam and runs great.

its most likely to much oil and its glazed the bore, new set of rings and a hone and it will be like new again

or you could just put a 165 kit on it

This sounds suspicious !!!! Did you have to leave the bike with him over a weekend ???? IF so he's probably taken it out and thrashed the guts out of it , then noticed it started to blow smoke , so he's over filled it with oil to throw you off and shift the blame off himself ...... I learnt to do my own mechanical work , tune ups and repairs as a result of the above scenario ..... panel beaters , mechanics etc are also known to do it with cars that are in for a service or repairs ......

hi in regards to them still blowing smoke i would remove exhaust and clean it out when my 250 had the smoke problem i did that and its all better the oil gets caught up in the end and sits there burning.
hope it helps

I find that a little offensive cactus,im a spraypainter by trade and worked in the crash repair game for quite a few years and let me tell you, any decent recognised repairer wouldnt risk their reputation for a quick thrill in someone elses car,its just not worth it as it jepadises future business.

I think crew should get their bikes hot enough in the run in stage to bed the piston n rings in properly ... that's why I reckon so many 2 month old motors blow smoke .
