Hi.
I have just bought a z40 cam and heavier valve springs to fit in to a YX 140 engine.
Any tips on how best to fit....?
Also, do I need a valve spring compressor.

No mate you dont need a valve spring compressor. if you put the engine to top dead centre then all the valves will be closed so you can jiggle and slide the cam out.

In order to replace the valve springs you will need to pull the head. They can be replaced without using a valve spring compressor but it would be easier with one. To take the springs out put a socket over the top of them and tap it with a hammer until the keepers come out. To put the new ones in you can push the spring down with a wrench while putting the keepers back in. there will probably be cussing involved.

you need to remove the head to fit everything mate...

you can remove and refit the springs with a socket and a lot of patience

Sound lads. Thanks a million for that.
Will give it a go on the weekend!

i used a spanner, a socket and a clamp, not to mention a lot of swearing. almost lost a retainer clip thing when it all slipped out, thought it flew across the room. i found using a socket to put them back in was too frustrating, could not see what was happening. so used a spanner open end to compress it then put them in with a magnetic screw driver. good fun, and good luck.

A drill-press helps, if you have one, for compressing the springs, if you don't want to spend $25. Cut-away socket or piece of tubing and a mate to help is good. A dab of grease on a non-magnetic screwdriver tip makes the keepers easier to install. My apprentice handles most of the head assembly, though.

aah..I see , you are not longer alone in your workshop, Terry...early bird catches more flies I guess

Thanks for the replies
Sounds like it could be tricky! - is it worth it?

why dont you just do the cam first as its easy. then go the springs when your confident

The Zed-40 will float the valves, probably bend 'em to heck. Likely have coil bind on the inners, and wipe out the new cam and rockers, too.

Nice, Sean:)

If you aren't keen on roll-your-own compressor, a Lisle 23300 should be $20 some where close by.

I use this one, a few bucks more, but needed for Tak and KLX-type heads.

That is brilliant - can make that easily. Thanks a mill.
Cam arrived yest, but they forgot to send me the springs and sprocket, so that gives me time to make this up.

Reading this thread reminds me of this one from a few years back :

http://www.miniriders.com.au/tech-talk/15571-how-remove-valves-2.html

The link that doesn't work now shows the compressor in the red box as shown by GDFP ...

Heed GDFP's warning and run the proper springs as supplied with the cam ... and even THEN check for coil bind , retainer to guide clearance , piston to valve clearance etc ...

I've still got a few new sets of those Lyle small engine valve spring compressors ... (as shown on DRATV's site) ...

Neat fab work Sean ! ...
