how you had it looks fine. looks as if the caliper is floating too far dropping the pad from the black retainer. the metal clip just stops the pad jumping around.

just watch when these engine kick back real hard they can jump the kick starter teeth and split the right side centre case, which is a pain to fix, try pushing the kick start to a point where you can feel the compression kick in then give it a major stomp. this should over come the kickback too.

yeah i would def upgrade to a unifilter from one of those i have had one in the past they are non cleanable as they run a paper element under the mesh and quite often the resin breaks dropping of the filter or chrome end cap allowing dirt in.

i would say the click you hear is the starter solenoid getting power from the battery so check your starter motor and the power wire to the solenoid (should be a black round or square box with two power posts, one from battery one to starter) and also check your earth wire from the starter...
