Hey,

Just did a fresh top end rebuild on my Lifan 125cc. Put new cylinder, gaskets, piston and piston rings. It rides perfect and always starts either 1st or 2nd kick.

The problem I'm having is that it makes a pretty loud ticking noise from the very top of the engine (near the head).

I have no idea what it could be. Oil levels are fine..

Any ideas?

Cheers.

did you set your valves clearances? if so its possible you set em wrong.

also you say new head!! did you make sure the piston is designed for that head, some pistons have a bigger dome than others and can hit the head or valves..
to correct this you could fit extra base gaskets..

oh and please tell me you used a head gasket... we pulled an engine down the other day only to find a dude thought a head gaskets was an optional extra.... friggin silicon everywhere, even blocked off the oil feed to the cam...

Hmm I set them when I first put everything back together but I'll double check them tomorrow.

The head is exactly the same size as the stock 125 Lifan one, the old one was damaged so I replaced it instead of getting it honed. But I had to get a slightly bigger piston but the shop I bought it from said it would suit my new head fine.

Haha yes, I used all new head and base gaskets.

hmmm , seems like you got a lot of wrong names going on here.. (bit confusing)

heads dont get honed.
if you needed a bigger piston then its not the same as the original one..

to clarify... the head is the section right at the top, it holds the cam and rockers and spark plug..
the barrel is the bit the piston moves in..

to me it sounds like you have mis-matched items installed and the first thing id be sus on is the piston to bore clearance...or the piston pin to rod clearance...

think you might want to at least post what size everything was before you rebuilt it and what size piston and things are now..
an engine number may help too, and any supporting links of items you have used too

a few pics of things would help too..

Haha sorry, had a long day hence the usage of wrong names.

I've got a KX250F but this is just my **** around toy.

Well, I've done the valve clearances and they are fine so it must be something to do with the piston.

Here's a couple pictures of the engine and my old piston..

check your piston to bore clearance and also piston to head and piston to valves..

another thing, did you measure the barrel height of the new one and compare to the old one...
