the 125cc quad i'm working on after removing the head all back together but won't start. Is there a way I can check the timing? we have petrol flow and spark but I cannot see how I'd go checking the timing? thanks .Thomasg

Hi Thomas,

Good to see you got on the forum ok. :)

Just changed the thread title for you.

Craig can you jump on and give Thomas a hand with this one?

Good luck mate.

hi welcome to Miniriders,

is it an electric start ?

if so there is a slotted chrome cap on the top of the l/h side stator cover that needs to be undone and removed.

also undo and remove the centre 10mm headed bolt of the r/h side of the head.
it's just in front of the spark plug here-

the big round cover on the l/h side (opposite side to the 1mm headed bolt) of the head should now be able to be taken off.

now you should be able to check the timing marks.
turn the engine over a little and in through the top hole of the stator cover you will see a couple of lines stamped into the flywheel.
the first one you see will be the F marking, turn it a little more and you'll see a T marking.
if you can get the T mark to sit at the top of the flywheel, in the centre of the hole that could be TDC
now check the Timing mark on the camshaft gear, there will be a dot or arrow stamped into it.
if the engine is at TDC, then the dot/arrow should be facing the front of the head, at 9 o'clock.

if both of the markings line up then that is TDC, and your timing looks good to go.

if the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up, but the marking on the cam gear isn't, it could be 180° out.
so just turn the engine over a full revolution and get the T mark on the flywheel back to the top again.
now check the alignment on the marking on the cam gear to make sure it is a 9 o'clock

Thank you for that, I should tell you that the head was removed because we saw a hole like stone damage in the head, but now find it is the norm for this type of engine so I wish I'd been introduced to this forum a week ago.. Thanks again. Tom

no problems.
yeah there is an air duct sort of setup on them that helps cool off the head by letting air flow up from the bottom front of the head, up and out past the spark plug

so is your timing ok ?
and did you get it running again ?

not yet, as it belongs to my grandson, so he is the only one in a hurry. I know you know me as a junior member but I'm sure that is because I'm a new member. I've been around a while, but I've been able to dodge these motors so far. Thanks again Tom

ok,
if you have any other questions about it just add them on here.

Thanks again, all's well new carby and a few hours of ( wasted ) labour because we did'nt quite know what we were doing. but it's a goer and I gave the photos of the motor you sent us ( great help ) to my grandson in the start of a book form hoping he collects this information for himself for the future. I'm a retired Victoian locksmith feel free to contact me if you think I can help someone in someway.
