Went for a ride today on my motovert and my gpx125 motor gears are playing up, 1st 2nd 4th are fine but when you hit 3rd it goes on and off the power like it is skipping and makes a wierd noise. What's wrong with it??

being a relatively new engine it sounds like it isnt selecting 3rd gear properly, check the shift drum hasnt come loose.. theres a bolt behind a rubber bung above he front sprocket and 1 internally. just remove the clutch cover and the clutch and youll see it.. pretty common for them to come loose or not be done up tight from manufacturer..

if it was an old engine id say its wear and tear... worn gears (dogs) is common too..

has your chain fallen off or anything?
my gpx did this and it was the shifter drum was ripped off due to sprocket/chain problem...

No carnt be due to the chain because it has never came off and is always reasonablelly tight and no there is no ringing sound it just skips like the cloth is engaging on and of all the time and makkes a sort off grinding noise

Trans shimming, shift drum end play, and the damage already caused to the skipping gears dogs and slots.

you know having the chain too tight can cause problems too!!

So what needs replacing??

what ever gear is screwed needs replacing.. more than likely 2 gears in total. and like terry said, check the shimming out in the box

Hey. I had this problem with my mini. 3rd gear would slip in and out as if i was blipping the clutch in and out. What it was in the end was the gearbox selector forks. The one which selects 3rd gear had a worn selector edge on it. This is caused by my riding style. I tend to lean on the gear lever while going through the gears, therefore pressure is always being applied to the selector fork for 3rd gear. Grab a new gearbox assy from ebay and put it in. It worked for me!
