Yeah , with those carbs the choke is off when the lever is down and on when the lever is up ... There ARE others that work the opposite way tho' ... When the choke is on , the butterfly will be blocking off the airflow into the carb and that forces all of the vacuum to suck fuel thru the jets to make the bike start easier ... The throttle should not be touched while starting the bike as that will flood it and make it near impossible to start ...
Try kicking it over with the choke OFF and do not touch the throttle ... Lifting the slide causes the vacuum to drop and the suction on the jets also stops because the engine is going too slow at cranking speeds ... Turn the idle screw up if you have to ... Your main aim is to get the engine started and keep it going on its own without the need to touch the throttle ... Then you can tune it once it's warmed up ...
To tune the air/fuel mixture ... get the engine idling fast , then screw the mixture screw in until the motor starts to die , then back out until it starts to run weird then screw it back in by half the amount of turns you screwed it out ... Lower the idle and repeat the procedure until you get a steady slow plonking idle with no fluttering or variance in the revs ... the lower you get the bike to idle , the more sensitive the carb will get to the screw being turned ... (half a turn either way will make a change in the exhaust note) ... once you've got the mixture homed in with the slowest possible idle speed ... turn the idle back up to suit your requirements ... IF you've done it right , the engine will start first kick every time without your needing to touch the throttle ...
Carbs with the fuel screw underneath at the rear need to be tuned slightly differently to that , but they are also a snack to tune ... My friend bought a new 2009 DHZ 125 bike that has a PZ26 Keihin copy carb on it and it was a cinch to tune because the fuel screw sticks out further than it does on the annoying Mikuni copy carbs that earlier models used to have ... The newer carbs on the DHZ's are also quite impressive as stock ... Incidentally , Ivan did the EXACT same " start with the choke off then die in the ass when he turned it on thinking it was off " trick ... The best way to avoid that scenario is to remove the air filter then flick the choke on and off until it's programmed into your cranium which way is which ... some people are very forgetful and should write it on their forehead with a texta until they get it right ... and for others ... tattooing it on permanently might be a consideration ...
