Hey all. Im throwing some idea's around in my head and i'm after some feed back and idea's as I'm not up to speed with the 50's as yet.
I'm after 2 crf50's. I have been doing the sum's to work out whats the best way to go.
I have 2 option's.
1. Buy a 2nd hand bike and change all the things that ill need to upgrade like strengthen the frame. fork springs, longer swing arm, Decent wheels. A pipe. Bar kit, 88 and the usual things people do to them.

2. Buy a frame like the one below and do a ground up build with all the parts I want.

Fast Frame/Swingarm Combo CRF50 & XR50.

If I take option 1 ill be buying a heap of parts that come on the bike I wont need.
If I do option 2 i'll have to try to find an engine.

I want to stick with the "A" style swing arm..

Throw ideas and feed back at me to help with my decision. Thanks

I thought about that but i find most people are selling at higher prices to try to recoup some of their outlay.
I'm not real keen on buying someone elses problems unless its a bargain

whatever you do, if you go 88cc, go the race head. im wishing I did now.

I dont have a budget. If i build 1 i'll take my time and get the right parts for it and do it as I can afford.
If I buy 2nd hand i want to spend about $1000 ish.
Do many 2nd hand motors come up for sale much?

make a different build, buy a crf70 style frame, build a 12/10, GPX 125 engine build.. would be so sweet.

best off to buy some bikes with allready a few modes to save a bit off $$$ , believe me they are not cheep to build up from scratch , so better to get 1s with mods , and they are hondas dont matter really what yr and they are the motors strong reliable little engines , and ntohing a new set of piston rings wouldnt fix:)
88 with the stock hd will keep ya in the limmo class , and they nearly triple the hp from stock

The CRF50 frame in the US is expensive, Shops generally like to use the most expensive shipping options which cover there a-holes but is not always the quickest, They would more than likely want to send it via FEDEX or UPS (NOT USPS) which is rather expensive, The frame would cost about $800AU landed in Australia, If they would even send it here?

Maybe cheaper to buy a bike going but if your like me you will enjoy building it

Just gotta sell off the crap you dont want & buy the goodies for it as you go

Plenty of them around for a little bit over $1000>

It makes perfect sense what your saying. I find though that ones with mods are pretty expensive. I know they have had a heap of cash put into them but chances are they have had a flogging too. I dont mean just the engines but wheels, frame and suspension too.

I'm going to buy 2 stocker's for the kids and and keep them stock but I want 2 88's for the girlfriend and I.

When you put a 88 kit in with a standard head is that the limited setup?
Did the 88 kit imrove it much?

umm dunno, we dont have races in WA so limited, superstock, whatever means nothing to me.

yeh the 88cc made a 100% improvement. I got the 88cc kit with cam and carb, and I got a pro circuit pipe. if i got the race head in the kit I would have saved money thats all. the RH would be as far as my mods would go.

building from scratch is rather pointless unless you going full mod IMO with a bomb front end and a crate motor as finding donor motors dont come up often.. I managed to score a couple lloose honda motors last year but havn't seen anything pop up in a good 6 months. Most guys swapping 125's or 150's into a crf50 dont want to sell the motor sitting in the shed.

Sounds like buying 1 with some mods might be the way to go.
I wanted a Billetware or Red baron frame or similar and run a bigger swing arm but stick to the "A" style swinger.
I have not decided on forks but im not real keen on the standard style forks. Good for the kids but not for me.

I also think that spending a bit more upfront to buy a bike with the mods you are looking for is the best option. People that are trying to sell thier modded 50s are taking a pretty big hit as the scene has died in most areas. I bought a looked at both options when buying another 50 and I ended up buying a brand new bike and doing the mods myself, so far I have spent aprroximately $4000 including the bike and still have stock forks, frame & swinger. I have been keeping my eye on eBay over the last few months and the type of bike I could have got for a similar price is much better spec just used. Eventually you will spend the money either way.
