yeah sounds like a plan. cheers for all the help mate!

just a bit of an update, i've pulled the exhaust off and the ring was stuffed, so waiting on new ones from dhz before i can get it all together. one of the exhaust bolts came off sweet, but im having major difficulty with the other one, it seems no matter how tight i lock the nuts together, they still spin before the exhaust bolt does, i've now loctited the bottom nut and will let it set tonight and give it a shot tomorrow. (i'm trying to get the exhaust bolts off cos the thread on one is stuffed, and am replacing them with new bolts)

also when i had the exhaust off, i noticed there was a removeable baffle in the muffler. will removing this baffle allow the bike to run a bit richer?

Na not from my knowledge but will make it sound a bit better/louder.

just an update, i fitted the new exhaust gasket and did the valve clearances. it's still running hot. started her up cold and just let her idle, exhaust started glowing a bit after about 2 mins of idling. got a oko 26mm on the way, hopefully it fixes the issue. any other possible problems you guys reckon?

Where is the bike sitting when idling! Like I said earlier on my exhaust glowed red for awhile when I first got it and still does every now and then, but is still going strong. One other thing is it reving high like can you back the revs of a bit when at idle. I'd go the oko anyway mate they are set up to go and are easy as hell to change jets to richen it up.

yeah it was idling slightly high, i turned it down a bit, but still glowing red. im just holding the bike upright while its idling. hopefully the oko fixes it. i just dont want it doing any major engine damage by running so lean at the moment

*****update****

alright guys, i've swapped the exhaust gasket, and put in a new oko 26mm. exhaust is still glowing red after a few mins of idling. is it still running lean? i honestly don't know what could be causing this, maybe it's supposed to be like this? i've done valve clearances and they're spot on. the jets on the oko are 36/100. it idles and runs fine so i haven't touched any mixture screws...any ideas?

What sort of exhaust is it?

It's not really the end of the world. As long as it's running right. I mean how often to you just sit there with it idling for a few mins?

stock exhaust with the baffle still in it. it's definitely taking much longer to start glowing. gonna take it out to a spot tonight to test run it.

Are you sure the pipe is totally sealed to the head?
Make sure you have no leaks on the inlet manifold at all.
A glowing exhaust is not real good at all. A bike should sit and idle without the pipe glowing.

yeah im pretty sure it is mate, ive done the nuts up pretty much as tight as i can, and there's still about a 12mm gap between the flange and the head. i've uploaded a pic of the gap, thats an 8mm spanner.

would you advise wrapping the head of the pipe in plumbers tape just to make sure it's getting a good seal?

might pull the pipe off again to see if the copper gasket has been crushed at all.

^^^ That's WWWAAAYYYY too much gap. Theres ya problem.

If you do it up a couple of turns at a time alternating on each side you should get it on a lot more than that.

well just pulled the whole exhaust off and had a look at the gasket, only 3/4 of it had been crushed, so the header wasn't on flat, this is because when i did it last time, the rear muffler was still held in by the bolt, so this time i tightened the headers completely first, then did the rear, had to bend the pipe heaps just to get it to line up. i checked the washer again after i fitted the exhaust and this time it was perfect, whole ring was crushed evenly. put it all back together and fired it up. exhaust is still glowing a bit, but it definitely takes much longer for it to glow. there is still a gap between the pipe and the head, but it's nearly half of what it was before.

Get a couple of gaskets in there to make up the difference or use exhuast pipe sealant just to be sure.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1347525566.742233.jpg

I would keep working on it to get it to sit in properly.
The pipe should sit against the copper ring and the ring should sit against the head with the nuts pulling it together. If it dont there is a problem. Once you get the pipe to seel your exhaust will stop glowing.
Make sure you do as motorman said. As you do the nuts up alternate as you go turn for turn. The flange wont do up if you do one side then try to do the other. It will pull up un even

if sealing the exhaust doesnt fix it glowing red,
id be dropping the clip on the needle at least 1 notch, and then seeing how it goes.

or check for vacuum leaks,
with it running,
spray some degreaser or wd40 on the intake maifold ends, where the o'ring meets it on the oko rubber manifold and where the manifold bolts to the head
if the idle changes in any way then there is your leak.

DHZ: yeah i used that method to tighten it, im sure the pipe is against the copper ring, and the ring is against the head, i pulled the ring out just then and it's all been squashed evenly, there's a perfect round indentation on both sides where it's sealing. i rekon i'll grab some of that exhaust pipe sealant as well just to make sure, i'll also check for any potential vacuum leaks.

i took it for a spin tonight, doesn't glow while riding, but when i stop it glows a bit. bike feels really good with the oko, took a bit of fiddling around though to get it perfect. initially it was bogging down a bit in the low rpms, but after playing around with the mixtures it's running pretty well. up top in the rev range its running absolutely awesome.

i'll pull the plug out tomorrow and have a suss, and i'll try dropping the e clip a notch, see how that affects it.

thanks heaps for all your responses, it's helping out massively. learning heaps about the bike and how to do a lot of the work on it. all good fun!

The needle height should only effect its midrange. If its glowing at idle its either the idle jet is too small or you have a small vacuum leak on your inlet side.
Has the back firing stopped when you back off when riding it?

nah mate it's still popping a bit under deceleration. it pretty bad to start with, but after fiddling with the mixture screw a bit it's much better, but still popping when i come off the throttle.
