yeah i gotta agree.. If you ride hard for a while pushing yourself, you can then feel comfortable riding that hard and then becomes 2nd nature.. Half the pros probably do their warm up laps the same speed as some of others best lap times, its because they have become comfortable with that speed..

But riding smooth, good braking will always be better than brake late, stop starting...
 
I reckon its all about staying calm.If you ride really fast and on the edge and have something happen (like front wheel slide out) and react and correct quikly without panicking your chances of staying on are much greater
