Hat's off to you Dready ... You've gotta be physically and mentally tough to be in either the para troopers or commandos ... The only problem with Uncle Dennis was that he was a Sargeant and didn't know how to switch off after he left the force ... so we copped some military style discipline much to our disliking ...
So you've got compression ... is it ankylosing spondylitis ? I haven't got it in the lower back but my neck is bad ... Yes my Uncles calves were HUGE from all the training ... and he had the tiniest ankles ... it looked weird ... LOL ... You'll retain the calf definition and size for life ... Driving them thru the pain barrier on those walks long after they screamed at you to quit hones the friggers into your DNA ... The tissue remembers the trauma and is too scared to slacken off ... LOL ...
Dennis didn't maintain his training , got diabetes and died from cancer a few months ago at 67 ... still with big defined calves ... they hung on 'til the end ...
