the reason it came out more golden is because you are reusing the yeast and it is fermenting it better.
you can keep reusing it as much as you want and it should keep coming out cleaner and cleaner

Actually the opposite? The clearer one was the first opening of the yeast bottle (as above) the latest (black exploding) is the 2nd time iv'e used it. But you can wee why with the amount of malt/hops + dark sugar that was added. Have you experimented with fruit at all? Thinking i might try an apple or grape beer, not to sure where to start though?

Pretty sure apple beer = Cider and Grape beer = wine!

Nah get into hops mate! Thats what you use to flavour beer. Ginger beer is a good mix and cheap!! Try some of that if you want to go for something a bit different. Or you can get really good berry cider kits from the shop, they come out pretty mint using just dex and the mix. In fact I've heard you can drink the cider straight from the fermenter....after a week ;)

The problem wiht fruits is they will have wild yeast attached to them. So you either need to boil or cook it until its sterile which will pretty much destroy any actual fruit! I've heard jam works as its sterile and full of fermentables ie sugar. See the only thing fruit will do is add sugar not particularly flavour. The flavor mostly comes from the yeast that you use. Basic run down of flavours and how they will come out, first yeast, biggest change in flavor, then malt, then hops, sugar is giving you the alcohol and technically should all ferment out of the beer so there is none left! Pretty sure that Mangrove Jacks bavarian has hops added. So if you're re-using your yeast make sure you 'wash' it....its a bit of a time consuming process but you can as I say use the same yeast indefineatly as long as you treat it right! ;) Look up how to wash or rinse yeast. To seperate the good yeast from the trub!

Nah definitely mean beer not cider, there are some great fruit beers out there, my fav being Krieks (sour cherry) but theres a few others. Havn't heard about washing the yeast, i will look into that. On the side of using fruit/apples do you reckon that you could just brew with malt and apples without the yeast? and just use the wild yeast?

You can try. Although have you ever smelled wild yeast....thats pretty much how you make vinegar. Most of those 'fruit' beers would have been using an artificial flavouring in them. Added after the ferment has completed......All I would really recommend if you REALLY have to try making an 'apple beer' is instead of adding dex replace if for a 2L bottle of apple juice but the **** on the shelf because that is sterilised. Anything in the fridge fresh will probably also have wild yeast in it. I've only had one batch go bad on me, and although it tasted ok, you would be wretching before you got the glass to your mouth it smelt that bad!!!

Hmmm i know about wild yeast as i have tried a fair few "lambic" beers which in all honestly are some of my favorite. My local brew store made one which smells like blue cheese and tastes like lime rind and sour cherries, did take him a year to make though, and it is the best beer iv'e ever tasted. I'll do some more reading and let you know how i go. Was talking about my blowing up beer on another forum and i am now about to try something stupid (and disgusting) but i'll let you know once it's done, lets just say it might be up there with the worlds most alcoholic beer (probably undrinkable LOL)

Bribie? Yeah thats why I like my IPA's.....super strong 5.5%-8% and super hoppy to disguise the heavy alcohol content! The more times you use a yeast the better it gets, the things is with wild yeast, you never know what you're going to get. That said all the beer yeasts available would have once upon a time been 'wild' they just get used over and over and over, the more times you use a yeast the better it gets as all the undesirable characteristics will ferment out of it eventually leaving you with something rather clean and nice, sounds like what your local bloke did! Try a lager kit instead of a wheat beer....Coming into winter soon, I'm going to try bottle up a few lagers and save them til next summer....dont like my chances though...I have enough trouble leaving them to 'complete' their secondary ferment!

^^ sounds like we need a dedicated Brewers thread, lol

Yep! I'll start one later and you can move it all across  just chilling out with the brassier and the housemates! Got a nice little fire cranking so!!

i think they'd take a fair bit of force to flex them.

otherwise you'd pull the clutch or brake in and the lever would just touch the bars

Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking.

Wicked idea though.

Would be sweet for midsizes.

Might look into them for my build.

i just bought a pair of ASV copies from china, for $40 inc delivery
they should do me for a while, a slight upgrade from the china BSE/Atomik folding levers
i haven't come off, or dropped the bike to be able to test them, musn't be pushing myself hard enough !

those ARCs' are about $180 a pair
