Sorry to start up a new thread, I have been searching the previous threads and posts trying to find a answer as I am sure I have a common problem or trap for new players.

Just bought an Atomik 50CC for my son, recived it Friday, put it together Saturday, started first go (second Actually) let it sit around and idle for half an hour or so and then put it away as we had to go out.

Got it out Sunday, started first go, let it sit round idling for another 15 mintues or so, put it in gear rode around the back yard, beautiful.

Told my son to go get his helmet, went down to the local park, rode around on it for over an hour mainly in second gear as he is only 7 years old and this is his first bike so was going rather slowly. I jumped on and ripped it up an down the gears to give it a test also. All good and I would say it was treated very sedately for its first ride.

Walked it home, turned off the fuel line and put it in the shed. Kid from next door came around about an hour and half later and my sons want to get it out show him and asks me to start it. Wont start.

As you may have already gathered this is my first bike. I read in another thread that I maybe shoudl have emptied the carby before putting away.

Anyway I have spark as I gave myself a little zap, fuel, and I believe I still have compression as when I kick it over I can hear what sounds like pressure/air in the cyclinder.

I did take out the plug and it was black/grey but did look wet.

Any advice for numpty like me?.

ok, valve clearance should get you going..

.003 thou for inlet and .004 for exhaust... http://www.miniriders.com.au/motor-tutorials/24965-how-set-valve-clearances-horizontal-engines.html

also just make sure the battery has enough grunt to turn it over quick enough, unless of cousre you are kicking it..

word of warning tho, DONT let a brand new engine idle for more than a couple of minutes without at least giving a few quick rev's. youll glaze the bore quicker than you can say atomik is crap..

also do yourself a favor and drop the oil and run some quality MINERAL based oil..
castrol active 4T or motul 3000

Thanks for advise, may need to get soemone to help me with this one. It sounds simple, but I am better with computers than I am with engines.

If the valves are not set at the right distances, why would it work like a dream and then just not start?.

I wasn't expecting much after only paying $375 for the bike brand new, and was really happy with its first run. I am tipping that if I took it to a mecahnic to do this for me it woudl probably cost me the same or more.

depends what sort of shop you took it too..

tell us yr location, maybe someone on here in yr area is willing to give you a hand for a beer or 2.

but yeah valve clearances are pretty crucial on these.. from the factory there known to be set with zero clearance so as soon as the valves bed in properly the valves are held open untill you re-adjust them.

my bro has an atomik 70cc for one of his kids.. he was kicking the hell out of it for ages lol.. checked spark check fuel all was good..
i said oi set yr valves... guess what. second kick sat there and idled.. this was only just on saturday..
he also had to do the same to his atomik 125.. they both had never been done since new and only both had about 10-15hrs run time on them
now i also see this at least every week, personally and on here in the forums..

Cheers and thanks for the heads up.

I live in West Footscray in Melbourne. Have a friend who is a Diesel Mechanic and owns a KTM who may be able to help me as long as he can get over the fact I bought a piece of yum cha as he would call it.

lol no worries mate..

there is a member on here that usually helps people in the melb area.. "DVDrip". he'll more than likely jump in here sooner or later so if ya mate fails to help im sure DVD could providing locations arent too far apart..

DVDrip is in Werribee if I'm not mistaken... If your mate isn't up for it, hunt him down, he's a wealth of knowledge! :)

Thanks for all your help, I am sure I will need to do the Valve thing sometime soon by the sound of it. Bike must have just been flooded. It was left in the shed until the following weekend and then started 3rd go.

The kids rode it around for an hour or so and it was put away until Sunday. Got it out Sunday and started first kick.

Was put away until the weekend jsut gone and once again it started 1st/2nd kick so seems to be running well at the moment.

Are taking it up to a friends farm for the long weekend this weekend where it will get hammered for 4 days straight. If it last the weekend I will be rapt!.

Thanks once again

good to see that it wasnt anything major wrong with it. if there isnt a fuel filter on it, then put one on.

keep the maintenance up to it and it will last ages.
valves need to be set regularly and straight after you buy it.
oil change every 15hrs of riding.
if it has a mesh air filter on it ditch it and get a foam uni filter and keep it clean and oiled all the time.
keep the chain tensioned and use chain oil on it..

cheers
