I'm hoping to get some thoughts on the easiest way to remove them dry old cheap tyre's. Ive got a set of good quality tyre irons but recently had a hell of a time trying to remove a worn out rear tyre and replace with a new kenda. Ive changed a couple of tyres before but this one was an absolute pain in the you know what and in the end i had to cut it off with an angle grinder. I know pretty risky right but it was the absolute last resort. Has anyone else had to go to this length before and more to the point is there anything that can be done to make it easier?. My local shop charges $25 to install (no tyre included) one, is that cheap? should i just bite the bullet and pay up and be done with it?.

$25 well spent i think :) Than again i'm hopeless with that sort of thing.... Iv'e tried plenty of times b4 and 9 time out of 10 i end up pinching the tube :( So now i just bring the wheel to the bike shop and get them to do it.

Just got threw the same thing. The tyres were unbelievably hard ( bending everything put to them) I went to my local shop, they charged 11 dollars to pop one side off. I replaced the tubes then put them back on. A lot easier than pulling them off!!

Tips & Tricks for removing Tight, Tired Tyre's

I do my own. Just did it 2 weeks ago. Took about 20 mins to do front and rear. But ive been changing mx tyres since i was 11. Used flat blade screw drivers aswell, and a bit of detergent around the bead and its piss easy

Mate I've changed tyre's before, and detergent helps with putting them on, your actually meant to use powder as opposed to detergent or so I have heard. I'm looking for tips on removing cheap tight as **** 12 inch tyre's, if it was a piece of piss i wouldn't be asking the question now would I. Lucky you, you obviously haven't come across one yet, we will see how piece of piss it is when you do haha.

old hard tyres can be hard to get off sometimes,
but what most people forget to do when they are trying to get the first side off i, to eveny push the tyres sidewall and bead down into the deeper recess, centre part of the rim.
this way the tyres' bead has a heap of room to move as the outer edges of the rim are shallow, the centre section is deeper.
i normally kneel on the sidewall of the tyre at about 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock.
then put the tyre levers in at 12 o'clock and start from there.
try to keep the tyres' bead in the centre the whole way around.
i think you'll find this is the easiest way to remove a tyre.

when you go to refit a tyre do it basically the same, once you have the bead over the rim, try and make it sit in the recessed centre section, so it doesnt stretch the tyre as much.

and yeah a bit of talcum powder will help the the tyres slip over the rims, i have never used it though.

when you have the tyre off, take the rubber rim tape off the centre part.
use a bit of rubber grease on each spokes nipples too, in the threaded centre, and around the outside of it.
this way you will be less likely to get water into the inside of the rim and rust up the spokes' adjusting nipples.
then when you go to unbuckle your rim or tighten your spokes, it wont snap the spoke because it has rusted solid to the nipple.
refit the rim tape too, before you go and fit new tyres or tubes.

cheers, craig

Cheers mate you are very helpful indeed, I'll have to remember about greasing the spoke ends and keeping it centered I never thought about that before. That's the kind of input I was looking for thanks for putting in the time mate your a legend. Keep em coming.

Considering i change my 37" tires on my 4x4 with leavers bike tires are easy compered to 37s. Like i said though, detergent is the trick. Grease works aswell but sand sticks in the grease and gets in the bead and can stuff your tubes. Detergent just washes of easy or dries up after a couple hours.

i use tyre beed lube... (i just take my rim to tafe :p) soapy water does not work too bad either... im not sure if it contributes to spinning on the rim though

I haven't actually replaced a 4x4 Tyre first hand but talking to my VERY (not over exaggerating) experienced friend in 4x4 and a bit in motorcycles, it is easy to change 4x4 tyres compared to tiny 10'' or 12" bike tyres. There is alot of room to play with on them big tyres and if you drive the wheel on to a log or something it almost falls off. Just what he said anyway. Ill be doing more 4x4 adventures with him soon so maybe ill find out the hard way haha.

Exactly! I find it funny like I just make **** up, the tyre was not coming of with tyre irons and I don't care if your the size of a truck they weren't budging one bit, I actually bent a mates $50 tyre iron trying. Lucky you if you've never encountered it but don't make out as if it is a piece of piss for those that have. In the end i reckon the shop sounds best.

Re: Tips & Tricks for removing Tight, Tired Tyre's

I change tyres daily and you have a good run then you will get one with shrunkin tyre syndrome and I just want to kill something when it happens, depending on quality and brand there is a huge difference at times when it comes to changing and installing tyres, give me a quad tyre anyway over a 12 or 10 inch mx tyre, and customers at times wonder why there might be a little bruise or nick on the rim, when they say that a $22 fitting few is steep we just tell them we would rather not change tyres anyway, but 90% are as happy as a $20 hooker on pension day.

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, BREAK IT :)
