does the smart turbo run a positive oil seal on the shaft? these days most turbos off EFI/diesel motors dont run a positive seal, because they dont need to.

with a draw through setup you need that otherwise the vacuum you get around the compressor when the throttle is shut will suck the oil straight into the engine. with blow through (carb or efi) the compressor will never see that kind of vacuum so its not an issue. most oldschool turbos like garrett T04's have a positive seal because most setups had a carb mounted on the front of the turbo in the old days

you might be able to get the turbo built with a positive seal. otherwise its EFI/blow through, which is a new can of worms

im impressed that a turbo off a ~600cc engine is getting spooled by a 88cc motor tho. nice work

Yeah I was afraid of that happening but im sure it didn't because there was very very little oil going to it so the seal went after a lil bit of riding... its ok though i will have another one soon and your going to get a real kick out of the direction this project is going to go in... microsquirt EFI

I don't see why not, just make sure not to do a draw through like he said, i can't say for sure that it had something to do with the failure but im sure it didn't help.... whats redline on that atv... i could do some rough flow calcs for you if you want

The red line is around 6400-6500 rpms. That would be great if you could do some flow calcs for me.

Ok the KP31 turbo is rated at 65kw of power or ~87hp. so i convert that to lb./min and get ~8.7lb./min. Then from here you take 0.7L and convert it to ci which is 42.71ci. Next divide that by 1728 and multiply it by half the total rpm.... that all = 80.34cfm. next convert the turbos lb/min to cfm which is 124.28cfm. now take 1 divide it by 80.34 and multiply it by 124.28 and you get 1.5469 which is the boost ratio. you then take this number and divide it by 14.7... then subtract 14.7 and you end up with 8.039psi at redline.

This means if you ran the turbo on your bike at 8psi all the way to redline, you would make about 85-87hp.... thats also running it to its limit so keep that in mind. Hope that helps you out a bit.

Thanks that helps a bunch. I notice the KP31 has a manifold made on it and is made out of cast. What did you use to weld your pipe on? Do you have any more pics of your install? Thanks for the help

well i separated the hot side from the turbo and wastegate, then i threw it in my bbq for about a half hour at full temp, with is like 6-700 degrees. Then i just took it out and welded it with a mig welder on the highest heat possible. then i threw it all back in the bbq and turned it off but kept it all closed up. you hear the metal cooling but it cools slow enough that it doesn't crack at all. Send me your email and i will send you some high def. pics of the setup.
