one point you fella's are missing... tho i do understand what you's are saying..
the linkage setup requires far less spring rate just like an a style swing arm setup so it helps reduce the impact shock to nearly all the moving parts in the back of the bike (bearings, chain, shock bush's and so on)
300lbs shock vs 1000 lbs shock, fair amount of difference..
it also help suspension tuning for rebound and compression, soft shock helps the rear wheel stay on the ground over stutters and small bumps.. heavy shock makes the rear wheel bounce or glide over them meaning traction loss...
also all these years ktm's had the same setup as a pit bike and now they are slowly changing to linkage..
most jap bikes have had linkage since the early 1980's
