Hi guys,

went for a strap tonight, my mate noticed that when i was stationary for anymore than 30 seconds the exhaust would start glowing red. is my engine running hotter than it should be?

i've always had a suspicion that it's running a bit lean, can i richen it by turning the mixture screw out a bit? it's 2 turns out at the moment.

btw the bike is a dhz dpro 160.

Thanks

Danny

i wouldnt even be riding it,
not until you clean out the carby and check the jetting issues.
i dont think adjusting the mixture screw is going to fix it alone.
i reckon you need to get some jets etc, and have a read up here on tuning it.

asap

Wouldn't turning it out just make it leaner!. My 160 glows red after a few minutes of just sitting around idling so if your smashing it around on a warm night then stop and just sit there then the pipes gonna glow red from no air passing over it to cool it and at night it's gonna be a hell of a lot more noticeable than at day time. I wouldn't worry about it just check your spark plug to see if it's lean or rich. Google proper spark plug reading and compare pictures to your own.

A glowing pipe ain't good at all. Its too lean. 1 of the main causes is the 2 exhaust bolts on the head are loose or the copper ring is not sealing the pipe to the head. Check this before re jetting
Does it back fire when you back off?

DHZ is right with the loose bolts on the exhaust, that would cause it. Also these new still chromed exhausts will glow if left sitting for a very small amount of time like brendo said, these bigger bore horizontal motors really produce disgusting amounts of hot gasses.

Could be loose bolts on exhaust but more likely it will be your jetting being lean.

After getting mine correctly jetted I can leave it idling for an indefinite amount of time without it getting hot and it's a lot bigger motor than this.

thanks for the responses guys. it doesn't back fire when i back off. however yesterday i did notice that after riding for about 20 mins the bike spluttered and died, then wouldn't start. waited about 10 mins and it started again and ran fine.

i'll check the exhaust bolts first, then go from there.

just checked the exhaust bolts, there were very loose. i've done them up as much as i can, but there's still about a 1cm gap between the flange and the bottom of the head, is that about right? or should the flange be right up against the head?

also are those bolts replaceable? before i started doing them up the thread already looked as if they were stripped, and when i did the bolts up more i could feel a lot of resistance. i'd like to get them changed if i can

They are easy to change. Put 2 nuts on to the 1 stud. Tighten the 2 nuts against each other. Wind the nut closest to the head as to try to take it off and the stud should wind out. Sounds like you will need a new copper exhaust ring.the old one may of burnt out.

here's a pic of my spark plug, does it look ok?

yeah defiantly lean. Only way i can get my exhaust to glow red sitting there is by holding the revs up a fair bit for a min or so .

Order a new copper gasket for dhz the only a couple of bucks the original one is garbage .

Either invest in a few new jets ... or scrap the garbage carby as well and buy a oko 26mm

wow thanks for that guys. will screwing my mixture screw in more fix the problem a bit? i'll do some more research on jets and go from there...

thanks heaps mate! i'll see how tuning it goes, or i may just pull the trigger on a 26mm OKO

The leaky header pipe makes them run lean. You may find once you seal that up properly you won't need to re jet it

yeah i'll get that done asap. i'll order some new copper rings for it too. i've just run into a bit of a problem. the bottom of one of the exhaust bolts in stripped, so i can't get the nut on there. i gotta cut the stripped section of the bolt out with an angle grinder, then i'll remove the bolt and replace them with new ones.

i'm contemplating whether to just get an oko anyway, do a bit of a performance upgrade while im at it

Fix the studs and seal the pipe and make sure its running right then do the oko. 1 step at a time saves a lot of hassles in the end.
