The 12v coil will work, but may have a weak spark. Try the points first, fresh plug. Propane torch (not lit;)) works as a handy fuel supply if just looking to test for firing. A decent drill motor should turn it over, off the flywheel nut.

Points gap also alters ignition timing slightly, so the manual may be a good tuning guide. I have a book for the rotary-valve versions, all listing .012-.015 as gap, so you're close. 1.8-2.2mm BTDC as timing on most, too.

By the sound of this - are these 6V?? I thought they were 12?.

Will get a fresh plug (got a few spares now) onto it and try again. I suspect the coil, or points though.

Have pulled the magneto to bits to clean all the oil & spiderwebs and crap out of it first. Hang on a sec, I'll go and get some pics.

Better not get my good church clothes oily though!!

Yeah Mate - I've ordered
a) an inspection cover for the magneto (still had 1 left in stock in sydney!!)
b) a manual from Ebay
c) getting quotes for seats re-trimmed
d) found some rubbers, mirrors & stuff on ebay. Bit by bit.

Have to get the engine running first though!! :)

A lot of older scooters run a 6v system and this one likely does too... I'm sure your manual will be able to confirm for you when it arrives ;)

Have you re-assembled, set the points gap and kicked it with a new plug to check for spark yet? How's the carb coming along?

I might have to dig my old scooter out at some point (1982 SA50 Passola). It runs, just needs a bloody good clean up, a battery and some panels. Two other bikes to play with/repair/upgrade is keeping me from it though...

Hi Krazed - that's tonight's job! I bought some carby cleaner from the Repco @ Bowen hills on the way home tonight

Will clean the carby & test the points / magneto (once spiderwebs & oil is removed) tonight.

OK! ALLRIGHT!! Huge success tonight. First, I disassembled the Carby and cleaned it. Couldn't believe how mouldy and gunky it was inside. Had been sitting with rusty petrol in and the float (copper) had corroded green stuff all through. Cleaned thoroughly - reassembled.

Next I cleaned up the points. There was a big spot of weld on one side of the points, and a big pot hole on the other where the weld had landed.

Filed that down smooth and sandpapered to a polish

Next I re-assembled, and set to about 0.015 JUST before TDC. Connect up the coil, put the spark plug in and turn over BANG!!

Blue Sparks everywhere! woot woot!

Didn't fire it up tonight as it got close to 11:30pm, time to shut down for the night.

Oh - the other thing I did was super-glue the plastic bolt (neutral indicator) back together. Managed to get it re-assembled and it's strong enough to insert. Should do the trick!

So happy.

Mate, i am loving your progress and your build. I want one.

Great work, great updates.

+reps mate, looking forward to the next installment and some more pics!

Seconded... I'm guessing a vid of it running will be on youtube soon ;)

Good score with those parts!

nice man it will be a sweet build thread . let me know were you get the seat re trimmed. there is a place in brownsplains thats realy good and cheep . but idn if they do that kind of stuff

Choke! Got a quote for the 2x seats (1 x triangular saddle, and 1x rectangular pillion) for $330 wow.

That's probably a bit dear. That was with new foam cut though.

Maybe my expectations are wrong?

Pls post the re-trimming place in browns plains?

Cheers

Got some parts from TradeMe in NZ.

And about to buy some from a wrecker in Maryborough (probably will get the headlight & the rear fuel tank cover.

Spoke to the wrecker in person - very sad to hear that many motorbike wreckers are closing down - because of ebay & the like. They're being undercut by small backyard operations with no overheads - whereas they have overheads & licencing and stuff.

Interesting. I think some of the good wreckers will survive by getting online & getting out there.

Some of the more surly ones probably wont last - I've had some pretty bad customer service experiences.

This guy was really helpful - and was able to give me some advice about the bike.

Anyway - back on with the build. Blue sparks is where we were at last time. This weekend might get some attention!!

Cheers
