Hmm. The dude who sold me the parts from NZ - thinks (possibly rightly so) that this has been heated with a blow torch in the battery compartment area to 'lower' or 'chopperize' it a bit. Hmm.

will check it out - but he could be right!

Yay! Manual arrived in the mail today. My eldest and I spent a good twenty minutes looking through it. He was extremely interested. So we talked through how the Coils get all excited by the magnet swinging past, and throw their electrons down to the Capacitor - building up charge, then the points allow the charge to run along the wires to the Coil.

Then the Coil is all boosting the POWER!! and those little electrons are all like! Yay! I'm escaping to ground accross the spark gap.

Then we traced the wiring diagram back to the key - which shorts out the circuit and makes it easier for the little electrons to run to ground. That's where they love to live!

Fun times.

Anyway - it's still not running - but I've confirmed - She's a 6 Volter!!

cheers

I'll certainly try! hard to find decent plastics for it though. :( Might have to see if I get it rego'd without.

And the Kiwi guy who sold me the bits (still haven't turned up in the post yet) mentioned it looks kinda folded in the middle - "Choppered" so it's lower.

True. Doesn't sit on the stand very well - might need re-folding (and reinforcing).

How's your datto coming along?

O yer try trade me there should be a thing or two on there. I'll be in nz soon if I stop at a wreckers ( looking for datsun parts) I'll also ask if they have anything for scooters.

Yer its coming along well we got a mig welder the otherday so starting to cut out rust this weekend and weld in new bits. Just the sanding that seems to take forever lol

WOOHOO! Parts arrived in post from Tradme NZ. I got a side cover, 2x indicators, throttle cables, some electrics and horn and stuff. Good oh!

This project is GO.

Also - rest of "bits" I need to go for rego would be:

a) headlight
b) other cover
c) rear fuel tank cover
have sourced these from Wrecker in Maryborough for $80.

These I'll probably get after market:
Brake Lever
Mirrors
Footpeg Rubbers ($17 from ebay, posted from Thailand aftermarket footpeg manufacturer)
Indicators lens??
NEW CHAIN

Next steps: get the engine going & running sweetly

And then I need to panelbeat out the "bent bits", paint, re-assemble, get seat re-trimmed etc.

Sigh. Big project. Must have patience.

Cheers

Sweet you could take your plastics to. Fiberglasser and gett them to make you a set out of fiberglass wouldent be to expencif and would look cool

@fmx_22 - unfortunatley there are no plastics at all to even copy. I'll keep an eye on trademe and stuff.

Anyway - here you go everyone: the engine is up and running! It's a bit hillbilly but hey - it was lots of fun.

premix 2 stroke into a small tank, and jury-rig it all together - hey presto!

YouTube - Yamaha 50D engine works

PS - it's REALLY LOUD (no muffler). I didn't run it for too long - didn't want seizure or anything.

Love it! Nice to see an oldie resurrected.
Fired a few up on the stand, with propane, myself:)

From here?

Complete stripdown & bead blast / powdercoat casings and frame. Must save some $$ for that. :)

Panel beat frame also where it was bent.

I expect progress to be a bit slow on this one. :)

Last night I found some plastics on Ebay - they're off a T80 townmate but same shape & bolt holes.

Only problem is: 40 GBP for postage! that's like a zillion aussie zlotty.

So guys - any cheap alternatives for parcel postage from the UK?

Hi AC.

Just found this. Not sure how I missed it.

Looks great. I am sure you will have lots of fun with it.

Good luck with getting all your bits and pieces and getting it back in RWC.

Logic

Hi All - it's been a long time. Had my head buried firmly in the internals of work - and not much time to breathe.

A quick Update:

Bought a few bits from Maryborough, a few bits from NZ and some from the UK. Just purchased some footpeg rubbers from Thailand (Ebay).

Got the thing stripped down to bare frame. It's got a serious bend in the frame, so when I get a day off work at some stage I'll take it down to the panel beaters. Explain my dilemna and offer a carton. Hopefully they can straighten it out for me.

I've nearly got ALL the parts now - just need
mirrors
bottom chain case.

Decided not to bother with the plastics - can't seem to locate them.

Anyway - all the bits are sorted out into different sacks, off to get bead blasted & powdercoated.

First - gotta get that bend out of the frame!

Update. my new neighbour has a friend who is a car restorer. he looked at the bent frame and will help me fix it (within the next coupla weeks)!

Also some more bits arrived from o'seas courtesy of ebay:
A horn, 4 blinkers (New, reproduction, from thailand).

The crack in the fender is being repaired by another friend who does fibreglassing.

Next: Mirrors (Indonesia) & chain case (NZ)

Still super busy with work. Just toddling along with this restoration project at the minute, until I get time in the avo to get home & do a bit of work on the bike.

..

Mirrors turned up. Next stop chain case. Fender's progressing nicely. swapped some mowing with a neighbour who's good with fibreglass but crap with mowing. I've got a son who likes mowing so we're all sweet.
