Go work in the mines in WA for good $$.. Or look at off shore oil rigs.. more good $.. 4 weeks on 4 weeks off..

If you start an apprenticeship.. see it thru.. thats the most valuable bit of information I can give ya.. Its a long ****ty 4 years.. but thats all it is.. 4 years.. its NOT a long time! wish i knew what i do now when I started mine back in 97... lol.. wow.. I feel old now.. half you lot were probably still swimmin round in daddys sack lmao..

Mate. I have been a motor mechanic all my life. Specialising in 4wd and European. I am 45 now. I gave it up about 2yrs ago. Make good money. NAH. Own your own shop and make good money.YES. Go home with cuts on your head, skinned knuckles, grating your teeth at night, covered in s**t and p****d off then go for it. 1st yr apprentice, clean tools, sweep floor, monkey to others,2nd yr same but now get to do basic service,3rd yr do all above and now start getting into major things,4th yr do all above but really get pushed into jobs you have not been trained in then ask for help. After done time, pushed into big wild world, then get ya head into gear and suck it and see. The making of a great mechanic is one that has done the hard yards, has a lot of nouse and can actually think and look at a problem and figure it out themselves. All my apprentices I have had have gone hard and done me proud. Both in my civilian trade and my Army time. The simple reason is that I actually gave them my time and experience and knowledge and instilled it in them. I did not want any of mine to go through the same as I did. So if you find a joint that actually trains you and has a great informed interest in you then go for it. You will find the major dealerships will do this for you. As I had for me when I first started. I first started out as a Jaguar,Daimler,Rover,BMW mechanic and had a great start in the mechanical world. After I finished I went and joined the Army getting a posting in Townsville in RAEME for 4 yrs. Then I left and worked as a mechanic for a drilling company in Townsville doing fleet maintenance and eventually got my drillers ticket. Look for what your after and where you want to end up. You may take some shortcuts along the way but stay focused on what you want your initial outcome to be and work towards that by looking at what jobs are on offer and if they will help you in the long plan and will they put you eventually where you want to be. I after being a greasey as I said chucked it and now I drive coaches. Making a s**t load more money than I ever did chucking spanners. Your choice is yours. I wish you luck. Talk to a lot of mech's and they will probably tell you the same as I did. Until they start paying apprentices more than 2 bob a week they wonder why they cannot get tradesmen. As I said mate I was highly qualified and knowledgeable but the fact of the matter is employers want to pay nothing for people that know everything. There are guys out there that pay high but they are few and far between. In the end we all need to eat and survive.

As I said mate if your in with a good team go for it. I wish you the best. I just had had enough. I didn't want to go back to driving trucks and I make on average within tours, trips and runs $2500-3200 per fortnight driving coaches. I know it is a big maxima for earning as a mechanic as per runs. Never will I go back to the tools.

thanks fellas for all the help.
giving me good guidelines and everything.
might have a sit down and think about it aye.

i just started a diesel mechanic apprenticeship its pretty good!! could look into to doin that, and tyd you dont need to get a licence for a apprenticeship lol you would hardly need to move cars for them!

you are a knob..

You do have to move cars, they have to move them all over the shop, booth, sanding, outside.. ffs.. I hate n00bs that think they are top ****..

I have rung up about apprenticeships and it is the first thing they ask!

I have been to skills places and even they say that you need a license.. I don't think you are a trained skills worker that helps people look for jobs so stfu.

hey TYD,
are you wanting to be a spray painter too ?

where you from mate ?

I'm from Brisbane (qld).. Know a couple of people that are spray painters and I don't seem to bad at the spray gun..

Wanting to get into airbrushing aswell.. Also pinstriping, it seems to be a lost art.,.

yeah airbrush would be sikk. but im not too good at drawing ,
like you see chip foose and that other dude , do it all free hand , friggen heaps good aye.

anyway just thought id ask thats all

Look into being a diesel fitter (mechanic) there is always jobs going for the with salarys above $130k a year some are considerably higher.
Also it gives you experience with big machinery so it is easier to go back to cars or bikes when you get sick of it.

Thats what i did and never looked back.. of course to get that money u must be willing to move/leave home and stay in a overpriced accomadation pop up town (WITH ONLY 1 PUB  ) but even in cities/major towns it pays $60k+ from what iv'e seen over my time.

awk. when you do diesel mechanic , is it alot different to like just normal
cause if i be a mechanic main thing is motorbikes. not all that into cars much haha.

yep car mechanic is rubbish and diesel mechanic is even worse and alot more physical, iv seen so many mechanics with rooted backs its not funny.(im one of them)

motorcycle mechanic is alot better, alot lighter work.

ahh retard! ive rang up aswell and never been asked! all the people i no with a apprenticeship dont have a licence! never needed to move a can either. yeah the things you lift being a diesel mechanic are sooo heavy ha almost done my back in already!.

^^^yep well dont lift anything tht is too heavy, it your health and no one elses...meaning no one else will give a damn and works comp will dodge you left right and center...

if its too heavy ask for help or refuse to lift it....simple as tht..

Im doing a tafe course in school called "Family of trades" were u get to do Spray painting, pannel beating and automotive, i guess if ur undersided what u wanted to do you could always give this a go?

btw its 3 days at school (which is easy cuz ur in all retard classes) 1 day tafe then 1 day work experience

hope i could help..

199. where about is this based. ?

cheers mate

Im in Perth not sure if the course is run anywhere else, worth a look though ;)

yep its a job you have to like or youll throw the towel in.
i had it semi easy in my time. but that was an engine reconditioner so a little different.. my first year i was re-ringin light trucks and bead blasting heads and sht...but later in the first year i was doing head reco's form start to finish...
but generally you will get a different response from different people everytime with this question, because it comes down to a boss or leading hand to know your capabilities..

i moved to mechanical soon afterward s and man it sucked...
but i did a far bit of performance and race car sht so it sorta equaled out... didnt stay doing it long tho..
