cdi and spark plugs

hey guys ive just joined the forums and bought a CDI computer for my 125 lifan engined pit bike. The bikes a fairly generic brand one i ran the motor in and put a CDI computer on it and it seems 2 be ok thers def improvement but my mates 06 thumpsta seems 2 run the same and he has no CDI computer why is this? there basically the same bike. im aslo running a NGK spark plug

different gearing?... these cdi you speak of have non if any effects besides being able to ring your bike out just that little bit more, different gearing would be the reason his bike goes faster...
