My pull starter rope snapped when i was trying to start it on my doodlebug 30. I took it off and when i try to install a rope there is barely any recoil or tension. IT'll recoil for like half a spin and then click and won't have any recoil. Whats wrong??? why is it clicking. Is the spring broken? do i need a new pull starter?

Did you wind the new cord back on the right way ?

Is the new pull start cord too big for it ?
I normally replace it with some stronger/better quality lawnmower pull start cord from the hardware shop

The spring could be broken as well, be careful if you pull it apart to investigate, they can spring apart from the pull start housing and go flying, and have sharp edge's sometime's too.

Yeah i put it on the right way. And it's the same rope I'm re-using it. If i wind it around and go to pull on it to start it won't even move like the rope is just getting tight. If i have just the pull starter without any rope attached ill try to spin it and it'll just click after around half a spin and then it'll have no tension or recoil right after the click. If i try spinning it the other way it won't move unless i use force and theirs no tension or recoil it just spins.

What's are the chances of me actually breaking the spring inside when i broke the rope? I thought that was rare. I haven't opened it yet. could it be as simple as the spring being misplaced or is it most likely broken.

A lot of times when the rope breaks the spring end will become unhooked. It is usually just a big coil of flat steel strip, with the end inside the coil folded over so it will hook (fit) into a slot in the housing and preventing it from loosing tension.

I took my snow blower pull start in to the mower shop, they re did it for $10. I then saw Home Depot has the same rope used, but a $10 fix isn't bad at all.
