what getys me is the EXTERNAL(!!!???!!!) hone shown right at the start... ive never heard of one before! thats what cylindrical grinders are for.....

otherwise...any fairly light oil will do, even kerosene! in fact, kero is the most suitable of all...its abrasive itself, and is light enough not to clog the stones too much, dissiolves grease/oil.... its whats used in lapping... as is toothpaste :p

roger, ill back that up... iv found that kero is the best lub for honing and wd40 is second best... but it seems everyone thinks im full of sht.

Guess what Sean kero's the only lubricant/cutting liquid iv used!:D
Works a treat!

Synergy17: Could you just use normal oil?

The old guy wasnt at work friday but asked around a bit and i found out the reason why we do not use "normal engine oil" at work, quite simple we dont hav any petrol vehicle at work, just diesel and cng ( should had been obvious to me), one guy at work did try to explain it to me =, in the fact its like wet and dry sandpaper - u can use it dry and get the job done roughly and tear the **** out of ur sandpaper or u can moisten it and get a better finnish and save ur sandpaper. im guessing wat he ment is that the lubricant that u use not only gets u a better finnish on ur bore but also saves the stone on ur honer.

i found this vid and thought i might add it to the collection....

i must admit i still dont fully understand honing

bitta light lube
stick hone in barrel
spin that hone in and out of bore
for about a minute
faster/slower determines the angle of cross hatch it will leave in the bore..
